Not being seen or spoken to by midwife

I’m 16 weeks and 2 days pregnant and I’ve not had any contact from my midwife at all. I’ve emailed and called the maternity ward and they’ve emailed and called back saying that they will get her to get in touch with me.

When I had my scan at 14 weeks they were asking if my meeting with my midwife had happened and looked surprised when I said no.

Has anyone else had this and what did you do to help relieve the anxiety?

When I had my daughter the midwife appointments were at my GPs not the maternity ward.
There was a dedicated day at the GPs for the midwife to see everyone. Contact your GP Surgery to see if the midwife does a clinic there.

Great thank you. I’ll try that. When I spoke to my GP surgery last time they were just saying that they’ll try and get her to call me.

Have you had a booking in appointment?

2023Mamatobe · 20/01/2023 15:42

No. I haven’t had a booking appointment.

Be aware when I booked in late it was flagged up as a “concern” so just pre-warning you.

IME, maternity services are led by the hospital trust rather than GP, so I'd get online to try and find the phone number of the maternity unit reception or midwives office.

How have you managed to have a scan if not booked in? You must me in someone's system? Any clues to a phone number on your scan appointment paperwork?

2023Mamatobe · 20/01/2023 15:58

I had my scan at 14 weeks so I must be on someone’s radar. They didn’t have some of the paper work they needed which is when they asked if I’d had a meeting with my midwife before that and when I said I hadn’t they ended up getting someone in to explain some of the stuff that they would need to do.

That’s really strange as I can’t get a scan appointment until I’ve had my booking in appointments. I know some people get their booking in appointment and scan appointment dates at the same time but get them after contact with a midwife.

who did you contact to say you was pregnant and where did your scan appointment come from?

if you Google midwife in “wherever you live” and try and contact them or contact whoever you made contact with in the first place to get your scan appointment

Odile13 · 20/01/2023 16:08

How strange. I understand your concerns OP. Where I live the midwife is at my GP. I had booking in appointment at 8 weeks and then the 12 week scan date came through the post. I had a second appointment with midwife at about 18 weeks. I would definitely call your GP and follow up. I hope you see someone soon.

That's really unfair isn't it
But as op said she's on someone's radar if she's had the scan;
Maybe the midwife at your GP practice has left and the new one hasn't started??
I'd phone your GP surgery on Monday and ask to speak to the practice manager - if there is a staffing issue they should hopefully send you somewhere else x

I had scans as well.

Email PALS OP, they should get someone to call you.

piggijg · 21/01/2023 12:20

I hate how this is done to women by the very service meant to keep them well. Firstly your baby is almost certainly fine and there is very little to be done at this stage anyway. But you absolutely should have been booked in. Email the practice manager of your GP office and then email PALs. It's just unacceptable. You have ever reason to feel anxious. They've made you so!

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 21/01/2023 16:40

That's useless! You absolutely should have one - to take booking info, bloods, urine test, blood pressure etc.

I agree with others - GP, call midwife line again , PALS. How did you tell your NHS trust you were pregnant? In ours there is a phone line you call

BluesandClues · 21/01/2023 16:53

That’s not great, you need booking bloods and there are screening bits that should have been done by now.

I’d ring and ask to speak to head of community midwifery.
