Anyone experience these during pregnancy? I called triage as for weeks ive had eye pain and sometimes dots etc, but they told me to see my GP which I did he checked my urine and it was clear plus my bp which was 140/74 but at home reads more like 130ish over 70ish....he sent me today to eye emergency at the hospital and they checked my eyes and they are healthy and nothing can be seen so she said possibly ocula migraines and to see my GP or speak to triage again...anyone experienced eye problems like ocula migraines?

Yes I suffer from ocular migraines and they were worse during pregnancy. It’s scary because the symptoms are so similar to pre-eclampsia. Keep a close eye on your blood pressure.

Thank you, I will do I check it at least twice a week! How long do they generally last? I told the eye specialist that it's been going on weeks and she said that can happen?

I had them a few years ago - wasn't pregnant but I'd cut sugar out of my diet. They scared me to death until I went to see an optician.

I had them for a while, not while pregnant though. Keep checking Bp. Mine were triggered by exposure to a suddenly change in light.. opening the curtains if bright outside and dark in the room or stepping outside into the sunshine if I had been in a semi dark room before. But I guess it’s unlikely to be your trigger if you’re in the uk right now! Flipping cold and dark!

I got my first ever occular migraine during pregnancy. I only didn't freak out because I'd seen illustrations of what they look like previously. Otherwise I'd have been terrified.

I read that drinking a whole bottle of water and eating a banana would help, and despite being skeptical, it went within half an hour

Yep, I had them towards the end of my pregnancy and ended up in the maternity unit being checked for pre-eclampsia. BP was low-normal and I remained fine, had a healthy full-term baby Smile I found them very disconcerting though!

Yes during pregnancy and still hanging around since DD was born, mine are aura migraines, which can be caused by dehydration, which makes sense in pregnancy and now I am breastfeeding. I was checked out a few times for pre eclampsia and all fine, still better to get checked though

I experienced aura migraines in pregnancy. One sided head pain and behind my eye and vision changes. Mostly 1st and 3rd trimester.

Triggers were dehydration, lack of sleep, stress, poor ventilation, dramatic changes in weather.

I found deep breathing, fresh air, gentle walks in nature or quiet places and yoga helpful in relieving them. Also using squash to help get some extra water in; needed more fluids in pregnancy than I thought! If it was particularly bad, I needed rest and minimal movement in a dark room. I found those freezable eye masks helpful to place over my head.

I have started having these just the last two times I have been sick, had about a quarter of my vision go and had squiggly lines just beforehand. Luckily lasted only around 20 minutes but does give me bad headaches for a couple of days afterwards. I've never had migraines before but it does run in my family (dad, auntie and my sister). I'm going to be asking my midwife about them as does seem strange all of a sudden getting them now (I'm 15+1).

ditalini · 23/01/2023 16:10

I got them the first time after my first child was born, around when I got my period back.

They were really bad towards the end of pregnancy but still no headache (one time I lost the ability to speak which was particularly scary, another time didn't have the visual spots and zig zags but suddenly couldn't read the letters on my keyboard) - I seemed to be back up and down to the hospital for bp checks all the time but all was fine that way.

Now I'm hitting menopause and I feel like it's a bit more frequent again (although they never completely went away, but became pretty rare) so it's definitely all hormonal for me one way or another.

ditalini · 23/01/2023 16:12

Agree that dehydration is definitely a trigger.

PumpkinDart · 23/01/2023 16:16

Oh god my pregnancy migraines were horrendous in my first pregnancy, at one point I was having hemiplegic migraines that mimicked stroke symptoms. I had ocular migraines too it was relentless and they did a CT scan at 6 weeks post partum they'd gotten so bad. Once my hormones settled back down they went away and only came back during pregnancy but they were awful. Sleeping them off is all that works for me, and trying to make sure I've drank plenty of water.

Thank you for all the replies! I ended up going to triage and bloods were fine, they don't think it is ocula migraines tho so no idea what's going on!
