Can’t stop eating

I’m 7+3 weeks pregnant and feel like ever since finding out I was pregnant (only 2 weeks ago!) I’ve eaten so much more, and put on weight already. I’m actually worried that I’m going to totally balloon throughout pregnancy. Did anyone else feel similar? I realise there are bigger things to focus on / don’t want to complain, but it’s making me feel so self conscious already and I’m not even through first trimester.

If you’re listening to your body and you’re hungry I’d keep eating but make sure you’re trying to eat nutritious foods - dairy, fruit and veg, whole grains, unprocessed meat, fish chicken. I ate about 2000 calories pre-pregnancy and ended up needing about 3000 or more and my body needed it. If you’ve been a dieter pre pregnancy and are viewing the pregnancy as a green light to eat as much as you want I’d be cautious and maybe speak to your midwife. Likewise if you were underweight pre pregnancy it might just be your body trying to right itself. Congratulations- enjoy your pregnancy 🥳

I’m EXACTLY the same but have had severe nausea and can still only face carbs, cheese, Jamie Dodgers and chocolate, but by the bucketload 😖 I’ve had the odd bit of fruit and veg but in the main, I’ve been SO unhealthy. I’m just trying to accept that you’ve got to do what you’ve got to do to get through the first trimester and then hopefully I’ll be able to eat a bit better… three days to go! 🙈 So concerned I’m going to put loads of weight on - it’s baby #2 and with #1 I was nowhere near as bad 🙈

Catlikereactions · 17/01/2023 21:28

So difficult as the last thing I want (in fact the thought makes me feel sick) is vegetables and healthy things! Guess I just have to get through it and if I’m hungry, I’ll eat. I think there’s an element of me making up for the last year (when I was dieting for wedding 🙈). Makes me feel better I am not the only one @SkyBlue20 i just hope it’s easy to lose!

I was going to add that you need to throw in tasty things too!!

I’m 16w now and my hunger has settled but I was the same around 7w and literally could not stop eating!! I put weight on and over christmas but it’s settled now, touch wood.

I was always diet/fad diet type of person, could carry on without breakfast until lunchtime etc. In pregnancy, no way I can eat less than 2000 calories. I'm just really hungry if I won't. Well, yesterday I ate 1800 calories as one off, but it's because my hunger settled since I finished first trimester, so I can survive by just having a salad for lunch etc. (in first trimester I couldn't even look at salad. It has had to be sandwich). Same might happen to you. I put on weight 3kgs, almost 15 weeks. We will see what future weeks bring.

SnackyOnassis · 20/01/2023 09:45

Same! I'm 14w now and the hunger isn't slowing down at all - I need carbs, salt and strong flavours OFTEN.
It's especially weird for me as I had weight loss surgery in 2021 and so my appetite has been minimal for such a long time now, actually feeling hungry makes me a bit panicky!

rosemarycait96 · 20/01/2023 12:08

I was exactly the same - in fact the first 'clue' for me being pregnant was the fact that I was absolutely ravenous 24/7. I couldn't stop eating through the whole 1st trimester! The eating/weight gain did slow down at a lot in the 2nd trimester, but now I'm 36 weeks and the 3rd trimester really stepped it up a notch, I'm constantly hungry.

I would honestly just listen to your body. Try to eat filling and nutritious foods and snack responsibly... But to be honest, the first trimester is about survival and if that means eating fries and cereal all day, then so be it. I lived off fried chicken.

Good luck with everything!

I put on a tonne of weight when pregnant. I was a sporty 57kgs before and finished at 86KGS. A whale. I hated it and I’m still trying to get my body back a year on. I would say eat as healthily as you can manage. I didn’t look horrific until a while after the birth when everything was ‘empty’ and it looked like I was wearing a fat suit and had loads of extra skin. I also had a big baby boy. If I get pregnant again I will be watching what I eat and doing my best to not gain as much as it has been horrible!! I feel like I’ve not recovered and my body has been destroyed Xxx

I was ravenous and also craved sausage rolls in pregnancy. Never ate them previously, but I'd have scaled Everest for them. Almost cried when the shop near work didn't have them one day! I tried to eat healthily alongside, to get some goodness in, but only carbs seemed to sate hunger and appease nausea a bit.

sexnotgenders · 20/01/2023 12:44

Going against the grain here, but I'm not sure the 'listening to your body' line doesn't end up being used an excuse to eat way too much and end up with unnecessary weight gain (which you will end up regretting). You don't need extra calories in early pregnancy, and it's much better for you and baby to stay fit and active and limit overall weight gain. I'm 18 weeks pregnant with DC2 and have put on minimal weight so far, maybe a pound or two max. It's just not necessary (and I say this as someone who had to survive the first trimester this time with a toddler - it was fucking hard). If you need to eat to stop sickness, then pick healthy foods, and only little portions. Whenever anyone on here dares to mention maybe not using pregnancy as a licence to eat nonstop they inevitably get shot down in flames, but unless you're happy to wake up the day after birth 3 stone overweight, then I would caution some of the advice here, because it doesn't all magically disappear during labour

Ha ha ha, prepare for it, honestly. One one thread I said to woman worried about weight gain that if she doesn't increase calories intake to 4000 a day and won't turn into coach potato, she will be fine. God, the roast I got how judgmental I am. I just stated the obvious. Yes, women put on weight while pregnant (I also said I'm more hungry and put 3kg in 14 weeks of pregnancy😶), but "listen to your body" aka eat whatever you crave is really, really bad advice. Maybe accurate for first trimester when nausea is awful and you have many food aversions, but putting way too much on weight really makes things complicated.

bubble55 · 20/01/2023 19:32

I agree but disagree @sexnotgenders i haven’t gained too much and didn’t in my last pregnancy, but I had to listen to my body in the first few weeks of pregnancy as I was sooo hungry (regardless of if my body needed extra calories or not) that I literally felt I could pass out if I didn’t eat there and then. There’s listening to your body and there’s “eating for two” as an excuse!
