Hello, this is my first post but I’m a long time reader! I started working for the nhs in the summer of 2022 in a band 2 position. I’ve had issues with my periods and fertility concerns so my partner and I have decided to start trying for a baby soon. I’m terrified about the repercussions this will have on my job as I’m so new and wanted to know if anyone knows what my rights are/ rules I need to follow? I would want to return to work and feel that my boss and colleagues would be generally supportive but can’t help feel I’d be letting them down getting pregnant so soon into the job. (Though there’s absolutely no saying this would be a quick process which is partly why we want to start sooner rather than later). I definitely don’t want to miss the chance to be a mum and feel it’s the right time for us but am so stressed about work. Has anyone been in a similar situation or can offer any advice at all?

was 14 weeks pregnant by the time I started my role in the NHS. Because I didn't have the length of service for their maternity scheme I had to claim maternity allowance. If you look on your trust intranet/website you should be able to look at their maternity policy. It will have details of the different maternity pay schemes, plus all the stuff about risk assessments etc that you'll need.

Hi, I'm a band 2 hca for the nhs. To qualify for their enhanced maternity pay you need to be in your job for 12 months by the 11th week before your due. So basically, you need to have been working for the nhs for a year by the time you are 29 weeks.

You will be entitled to full maternity. Just be aware that whilst you can return to work, you might not return to the same job as such.

Thank you all for your replies. That’s really helpful!

Thank you for your reply. Can you explain a little bit what you mean please? My job is very specific in a small department so if I wasn’t to return to my job I’m not sure what I would do 🙈

Legally you will be offered your job role back - the contract that you have been working on.
If you wanted to request reduced/different hours then this can be rejected as they only have to offer you the job/hours you were working before maternity leave x

@Louiseem as long as you’re on the same and, you are employed by the trust for that band and might not have your exact same job role. That’s what I’ve always been told at my workplace.

Ahh ok I see what you mean. I’m not sure how that would work for me as my role is very specific and I am the only one in my hospital that does it. I’d hate to go back to something different! Will have to look into it a bit more 😊x
