How long AFTER your C Section did you get pregnant

After having my baby (through IVF) I was advised my one doctor to wait 18 months for my next embryo transfer. Another doctor advised 2 years.
Then another said if I have another c section it can be 18 months. But if I have a vaginal birth I will need to wait 2 years.

It makes me wonder what happens when a woman gets pregnant naturally after a c section and what happens then???

In my situation I'll be going to have an embryo transfer so will decide when to go back but I wondered how long did you leave it?

I was told to wait a year to get pregnant, but I didn't have IVF.

Fedupmum21 · 13/01/2023 20:17

After my first baby I waited 18 months (planned) to start trying and was pregnant after two cycles. After that section, I fell pregnant (not planned) after 9 months and just had my third baby two weeks ago today. She was early (so was my second baby) but due to pre eclampsia, but no problems with my scar etc and they said after the section that I couldn’t again if I wanted as my uterus looks fine. No complications from my third section, and actually it was the easiest recovery of the three.

I accidentally fell pregnant 3 months after a section and had a normal pregnancy and VBAC though they were careful during labour to monitor me in case the scar ruptured.

@Fedupmum21
Oh congratulations! I'm glad you had an easy recovery

@Katrinawaves
Wow! 3 months after?!
I had a massive bleed a few weeks after my c section. It turns out some placenta was still there. They didn't remove it until 3 months after and they actually couldn't remove it all. So I'm not sure if this will also complicate things but knowing it's possible after 3 months, I wasn't actually expecting.

I have been worried that the scar would reopen or something getting pregnant again but that just shows how quickly it can heal!

4 months, and ended up having another c-section. Doctor had advised two years when I asked, which I thought was a long time as had hoped to be pregnant again a year later. However in the end it happened at just 4 months. Pregnancy was fine, c-section at 38 weeks (39 for the first one), however was advised I wouldn't be allowed to go past 37 weeks if I had a third pregnancy as I was very close to a rupture. I won't be having a thrid child though so not concerned.

@WorkForMums
Gosh I bet that was worrying. Do you mean the scar rupturing?
I don't want to wait 18 months really as I am almost 37 so I ideally want to have the transfer in 6 months which would be 12 months after the birth.

Yes, uterus had been stretched very thin, almost see-through apparently! So can see why they advise a longer wait in an ideal world. I was 36 years old, and then just turned 38 for the second baby, so totally understand why you would also want as small an age gap as possible, but also be as safe as possible. Planned c-section was so calm and pleasant compared to emergency one after a 3 day induction the year before. Good luck.

ThePoint678 · 13/01/2023 21:25

9 months

ponderponderpond · 13/01/2023 21:26

@WorkForMums
Thank you. I was meant to have a planned c section this time but I went into Labour 4 days before the c section date and they did an emergency section. I lost a lot of bloody and my blood pressure was so high I had to be medicated to reduce it and they stayed with me for hours afterwards as it took a long time to go down.

Next time it will be a planned c section and hopefully this time it will all actually go to plan!!!

4 months. I don’t remember anyone raising rupture as being a huge concern when I was pregnant with dc2, but my additional scarring (t-cut scar internally and some extra stitching to stop me from haemorrhaging) vbac wasn’t even suggested, but then I was happy to go for a second CS. Dc2 was 8 weeks prem but this too was thought maybe triggered by my additional scarring so I don’t think my close births were a factor.

Starcircle · 13/01/2023 21:38

I had a vbac 2 years exactly after emergency c sec. All completely fine! Good luck

Searchingforsunshine · 13/01/2023 21:43

I had ivf with c section, then conceived naturally when baby was 6 months old. Had 2nd baby via c section as had them so close together. We didn't use protection after baby no. 1 as at most fertile, being pregnant can re start your system.

TheDuchessOfMN · 13/01/2023 21:46

I waited until my dd (section) was 2, before TTC. I conceived immediately and had a VBAC with my ds.
No particular medical reason for waiting, I just didn’t want a smaller age gap than that.

Now that I think of it, anyone I know with a small gap had a second c-section. I don’t know if that was by choice or not

gfy · 13/01/2023 21:47

13 months

Demonto · 13/01/2023 21:58

Officially advised two years between pregnancies (so would've been 2y 9m age gap), but I was 38 and thought we might not be as lucky as the first time so started TTC when DC1 was 12mo and conceived that month. I had an elective section second time due to the short gap (1y 9m).

daisydoods · 13/01/2023 22:00

We had IVF for dd1 and then I fell naturally 9 months after, there's 18 exactly 18 months between them

daisydoods · 13/01/2023 22:00

Oh and c sections for both 😊

boymama82 · 13/01/2023 22:18

I also fell pregnant 3 months after an emergency section! I was told to wait 18 months but it was an accident, I was on the pill and after having 3 miscarriages and lots of meds to hold onto our first baby our second was a natural miracle! I had a planned section with my second and no complications at all

Stupidquestion1 · 13/01/2023 22:30

I waited 1 year and had a very positive induced (for late baby) vbac.

bananamum13 · 13/01/2023 22:35

6 months after c-section, it was the absolute minimum drs advised as the internal wounds take longer to heal than external
