What can't I eat again? Peanuts and Tuna?

I'm pregnant with number two and for the life of me I can't remember (amongst a lot of other things!) exactly what I shouldn't be eating. I know pate/liver/soft cheese is out... but beyond that it's a bit hazy. Specifically I'm a bit confused about tuna and peanuts - I seem to remember there being something funny about them, but not too sure what....

Any guidance would be appreciated!

Ahhh!! Baby brain back!!! (though it never really left )

Peanuts only relevant if there is a known allergy in your family. Tuna is fine up to about three cans a week or a couple of tuna steaks. It's the deep-sea mercury thing. Same for swordfish and marlin.

Soft cheese - only unpasteurised, blue veined, or white mould matured (the white powdery rind) is "off".

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 11:01

You can eat tuna but limit it to one tin a week.

Something to do with some levels of something in it that you shouldn't have too much of.

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 11:02

Ooh can you have three tins??

Yey tuna pasta for lunch!!

Scampmum · 05/02/2008 11:04

New guidelines (not well-publicised) are that you SHOULD eat peanuts, even if you have a history of allergies. This is based on the observation that nut allergies have become far more prevalent in the UK since the guidance to avoid peanuts was introduced.

Please feel free to contradict me if I've got this wrong! I am 29 weeks with DC2 and eating peanuts based on the above, but stringently avoided peanuts all the way through with DD1 (21 months) as I suffer terribly from hayfever and SH has awful skin allergies.

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 11:08

I ate peanut butter in the early stages almost everyday. Had bad morning sickness and it was all I could stomach.

PotPourri · 05/02/2008 11:22

Scamper - yes, new research said you should eat them. I crave them, so was very happy to hear this. And Connor, same happened with me on first baby - until I found out I shouldn't have been eating it.

slinkiemalinki · 05/02/2008 11:23

Agree with the new guidelines on peanuts, and the tuna stuff - but I thought swordfish, marlin and shark were out altogether?

bogie · 05/02/2008 11:26

Soft cheese - only unpasteurised, blue veined, or white mould matured (the white powdery rind) is "off".

So what about philadelphia??????
I really want some

Scampmum · 05/02/2008 11:31

Philadelphia is fine, as is boursin. Pretty sure swordfish, marlin and shark ARE out altogether. Damn shame as they were such staples beforehand!

Also be careful with undercooked and cured meats, anything that's sat around in a deli all day, uncooked eggs.

Seafood is pretty much out, as is sushi.

JingleyJen · 05/02/2008 11:34

You can eat loads of seafood just make sure it is cooked properly.

moominsmummy · 05/02/2008 11:39

no caffeine, no alcohol,no steak unless well done, no pate, no fun

Chunkamatic · 05/02/2008 11:40

Green potatoes!! Apparentley any potatoes that have any green or purple bits or moldy patches are toxic to your baby and should be thrown away altogether.

I think the tuna guidelines are no more than two fresh steaks a week, not sure about tins as most of the goodness/badness has been stripped out of them by the time it gets in the tin!

Rantmum · 05/02/2008 11:42

No caffeine? I thought that it was ok to have 1-2 cups of caffeine a day, but no more than 3? When I was pg I was off coffee for the first 4 mths anyway and then after that only had one morning cup (a huge reduction for me as I usually can down 3-4 a day). Is it now banned completely?
And I thought alcohol in moderation was allowed again? I can't keep up.

think odd glass or two of alcohol is ok - caffeine is ok in moderation after the first trimester but I found that switching to decaff tea stopped all the pesky BHs I was getting - will stock up on loads of caffeine for week 40 so i can hopefully bring on the labour (was induced last time

ConnorTraceptive · 05/02/2008 12:12

Had a medium rare steak at the weekend it was Farkin lovely

bethoo · 05/02/2008 12:13

i think they say now that unless there are peanut allerf=gies in the family it is ok to eat peanuts, it is recommended to eat a variety of nuts.

ThePFJ · 05/02/2008 12:23

Oh thank god. I ate some Boursin at christmas and a big bag of peanut M&M's the other day.. I craved them so much..

I have felt secretly guilty about it . But not anymore..
Whew!

mum2fred · 05/02/2008 13:02

thanks everyone. that will put an end to the debate over whether DP should share his chocolate peanuts with me!

Re: cheese. Is buffla motzarella out? (i have no idea if it is unpastuarised or not, only that it is damn delicious and I want to eat it all day, every day)

Mozzarella is "unripened" so that's fine. (No white mould). It is possible to get unpasteurised mozzarella, but it's rare in supermarkets etc. Most unpasteurised cheese in this country carries a warning tbh.

FillyjonkisCALM · 05/02/2008 21:18

PEANUTS? my god i have them every day on toast...

TUNA? ONE tin a feckin week? Really?

feck me that is news, am on baby # 3 in 4 years and did NOT know about peanuts and tuna

twelveyeargap · 05/02/2008 21:25

Tuna is three cans, afaik. However, I have two healthy children and one healthy pregnancy so far, whilst ignoring all the food advice. In fact, one was encouraged to eat liver 12 years ago - for the iron.

I've managed to survive 29 years without getting salmonella or listeria from pate, I don't see why being up the duff makes me more susceptible.

Rare meat should be avoided for the risk of toxoplasmosis, not listeria. Similarly parma ham, salami and any other uncooked cured meat product.

Re the mozzarella, technically it's not a listeria risk, however, after all the rubbish burning and toxic waste problems in the Neapolitan area (where most buffalo mozzarella comes from) there is a fairly high risk of dioxin contamination. I've not been buying the stuff for my DD and am now careful about where my vegetables come from.

Tuna I thought it was max 2 small cans a week for the mercury, or has that changed again?

slinkiemalinki · 06/02/2008 10:12

I avoid - anything with raw egg whites, pate, unpasteurised soft cheese, coffee and tea (unless tea very weak) and all alcohol. I don't generally have sushi but I would somewhere I was confident about it(interestingly pregnant Japanese are encouraged to eat sushi I understand). I still eat my steak medium rare, but am pretty fussy where I have it. Same with seafood - I just exercise caution where I eat things. But then I am a slack and overconfident second-timer.
