Using a Doppler...

Hi

I have just purchased a doppler for piece of mind as I'm 20weeks on my 3rd and worrying about the movements being so little being nothing for a few days each time. So when the heartbeat is over 140 that's the babies? and when it's like 50-80 that's mine with being the pulse in your abdominal?

Later on in your pregnancy, if you're concerned, please ask your midwife for advice.
I'd hate to think of your relying on the doppler when there was actually something wrong.

Later on I wouldn't dare use one, it was just to pass the time til Monday like I said before I don't think anything is seriously wrong I'm asking too much too soon and was interested to hear..

Emmamoo89 · 13/01/2023 12:26

Please don't use one. They cause more stress than they're worth.

@Laujade88x I know it’s not advised to use a Doppler but I see lots of ladies use them on tiktok at different stages, so if you want some tips on using it and what the picked up I’d search it on there☺️ I think it’s each to their own if it makes you feel better to use it and you’re not relying on it instead of checking for movements then that’s up to you!

This is exactly how it is! Thank you!
I'm not stupid enough to not go to the hospital if I thought something was seriously wrong, its still pretty early to feel constant movement atm for me so I'm worrying over nothing I know I am I'm just super Impatient and it's actually nice to lay at home and hear the heart beat 🩵

@Laujade88x im the same I know people get loads of hate for using it but if I had one I would🙈

RambamThankyouMam · 13/01/2023 16:25

I know a woman who had a stillbirth because she thought she was hearing the baby's heartbeat but it was her own. Dopplers for home use are incredibly dangerous.

And how would you feel if the worst happened and it was your fault because you had relied on a Doppler?

OP, you seem hell-bent on not listening to advice from qualified midwives. I can't fathom this level of stupidity.

ChloeN · 13/01/2023 17:01

@RambamThankyouMam how will using the Doppler make a difference? I never said I’d rely on a Doppler I think they’re a nice thing to use if that’s what you want to do, if my baby didn’t move I would go to the hospital I’m not an idiot 🙄 Christ it’s common sense, not stupidity she never said she would rely on the Doppler either she was just interested

It's not "hate", it's sensible advice. I'm 39weeks and I'd much rather a trained professional told me my baby's hb was fine rather than just winging it at home, which is essentially what you're doing when you use a home doppler.

Yes, tiktok is absolutely the place to go for expert up-to-date medical advice about something so precious as your unborn baby

FGS Hmm

Ohgodthepain · 13/01/2023 17:18

I wouldn't use Tik tok for medical advice.

"hate"... are you 12? Don't be so silly. It's not "hate" - it's sensible advice based on what actual medical professionals and expert organisations say.

keepaweatheredeye · 13/01/2023 17:21

Yeah, TikTok is the same as a midwife with years of experience.

Idiots.

Laujade88x · 13/01/2023 17:26

Look I never once said I am relying on using a doppler because I'm so far gone I can't feel the baby moving! I ain't stupid enough to listen to a bit of home bought equipment! All iv said is that I have purchased one - for a bit of reassuring WHILE I'm still at the stage where I have a fee weeks to go before I should he feeling constant movements! After I am feeling constant movements and they start to fade where it becomes less then I will be taking myself to be checked out!
It all seems to be turnt as if I'm having serious movement problems and I'm relying on the damn thing which I ain't!

OP posts:
TinyArsePhone · 13/01/2023 17:29

Any reassurance it's offering you is completely false, and what you're hearing through it is useless without an expert ear to interpret it and look at the whole picture.

Like it or not, the advice you're being given is in the very best interests of both yourself and your baby and it's being given because people want you to have the safest most up-to-date advice and to have a healthy pregnancy and baby.

MaraScottie · 13/01/2023 17:31

Honestly, why did you buy it then. Utter waste of money.

Wishing you all the best with your pregnancy. But those devices should be banned.

Interested in what?

drV · 14/01/2023 05:07

OP, Let's say you go with what you claim - using the Doppler to get reassured till your baby grows a bit more bigger when you can constantly feel him/her moving. BUT my question is, are you efficient enough to know how to locate a fetal heartbeat at 20 weeks? At 20 weeks, baby is still very very tiny and swimming in a lot of liquor.. you could be picking up any arterial pulse and mistake it for heartbeat🤷🏻‍♀️

I have been going into hospital for reduced fetal movements from as early as 21 weeks. I genuinely feel that job is better left for midwives and obstetricians who are very skilled and are experts in this matter.. and moreover midwives are extremely lovely and will never discourage you from calling them Incase you feel something is wrong!

Don't get lulled into a false sense of security using technology in which you don't have enough experience. Life has the knack of throwing us into the deep ends when we least expect it to.

Rest is upto you🤷🏻‍♀️ all the best!

sepsisandAKI · 13/01/2023 11:13

It is really not advisable to use a Doppler. They give a false sense of security. Please contact the hospital if you are worried about movement.

This. They are advised against for a reason

So,when I call and mention to a midwife that I haven't had much movement to notice I get told oh its okay as ur only 20weeks u still have a few more weeks before u will notice it. What am I meant to do? Fake that I have pains etc just to be seen? No, so I have listened to what they have said and thought I would buy and test out a doppler, some people disagree it was my own choice. I'm not going to rely on it but when I'm told not to worry about movement at the moment then I'm supposed to not worry, doesn't stop me from being curious myself?

OP posts:
sanityisamyth · 14/01/2023 10:32

But a Doppler doesn't tell you about movements. It tells you about blood flow. If you don't know how to use it, you have no idea whether that's your blood flow or the foetus' blood flow. And even if you managed to detect the foetus' blood flow how do you know whether it is "normal" or not?

sanityisamyth · 14/01/2023 10:33

The NHS website has a large warning sign on their page saying do not buy one.

It is NORMAL not to feel a lot of movement at 20 weeks.
Why do you need to hear the baby's heartbeat?
There is nothing that can be done at this stage anyway. Doctors will not do a Caesarean for a non-viable fetus.

Yes I'm aware it's NORMAL, I have been told it's NORMAL, by a midwife, what's the harm in stil wanting to hear? Is it a crime to do so??
