I'm about 38 weeks now, for the last 3 weeks I've had a horrendous phlegmy cough, been docs and they think it's viral so can't do anything. I'm in pain now when I cough in my head and my stomach muscles, I have no energy from all the coughing fits. I had COVID at 8 weeks pregnant and barely noticed it, whereas this is the worst cough I've ever had in my life. (COVID test negative)
I'm getting so anxious that I'll still be coughing like this when I go into labour, I think I physically won't be able to do it (I have given birth before fine but wasn't ill) I feel like I couldn't even have a c section instead because I'd be coughing so much afterwards I imagine it would be hell with a c section scar.
On top of that there's the worry that I'd pass this onto the baby when she's born.
I am getting so anxious about it all that I now feel sick ontop of everything else.
I'm hoping someone will tell me they laboured while ill and it was fine!

No advice but im the same! 37 weeks and recovering from covid. Unable to sleep more than 2 or 3 hours a night due to coughing. I cough until im sick, until my stomach feels like its ripping in two, my throat feels torn. I just need some sleep and this cough to go before I give birth. Its my first and i was feeling really positive about labour and now im not at all. Going to call the doctor tomorrow and see if i can get an inhaler maybe. I was wondering about asking for c section but hadnt thought about coughing during recovery :(

You may recover in time?

I had a nasty virus at 38 weeks-ish and was praying that I wouldn’t go into early labour! It was the sort that make your muscles and joints ache along with the respiratory symptoms.

I mostly recovered and just had a lingering cough so maybe you will too.

(greeneye you don’t want to have that cough with a csection! I speak from experience 😬)

I had covid during labour. 37 weeks & 5 days. Every cough brought on a painful contraction. I had an epidural in the end

I had a horrendous chest infection when giving birth to DD2, was on some really heavy duty antibiotics - it was a complete pain as I couldn’t stop coughing in Labour. I ended up with a crash section - nothing to do with the chest infection, but post party got sent for a chest X-ray to rule out TB (!) and ended up with steroids and 2 more sets o f anitbiot

Sorry posted too soon - I didn’t find the cough too bad post section but I found the c-section recovery so much better than my previous natural birth, so might have been just lucky. Good luck OP

I had a horrific cold (cough, blocked nose and sore throat) when I was induced. The midwife told me you’ll forget about it when I’m in labour. I didn’t quite believe her but she told me the bodies labour chemicals and hormones but the body on hold. However… as soon as I gave birth (within an hour) my symptoms were back ha.

Yes, I took myself to A and E I had such a wheeze on my chest. I recovered pretty much as soon as I gave birth. It was as though my body was giving everything to the pregnancy and didn't have any fight left for itself. Once the baby was out I stopped coughing and felt so much better immediately. And DS was absolutely fine.

Just rest as much as you can. No point in battling on, give in to it, lie still and wait.
