Hi everyone

Hope everyone is doing well.

I was wondering how everyone has been deciding which milk formula to go with for baby.
I'm having my first baby next month and I'm preparing my hospital bag and it's all confusing and new too me.

Any advice I would appreciate

Thanks 😊

Whichever is easy to get hold of in your area and affordable! They are all pretty much the same.
If you want to try breastfeeding then you don’t need to take any formula to hospital at all.

Thankyou my midwife advised me to take something in with me incase baby doesn't latch on or take to breastfeeding.
Thankyou for replying :)

Most hospitals will provide milk (usually aptamil) if you plan to breastfeed but have a tricky start. Otherwise, I would recommend that you get the ready made bottles that aptamil do for hospital bags as they come with teats, so no bottle required. Most supermarkets sell them, otherwise the 100ml bottles which you will need bottles for are just as good (just more prep required) x

I started on cow and gate. Quickly realised that this was NOT agreeing with him as he had very bad colic and constipated from it. We changed him to Aptamil and within a day he was so much better. Its more expensive and hard work on maternity pay but it made him happier.

Doesn't need to be aptamil (one of the most expensive options!). Other brands do the newborn starter packs too.

Just because aptamil is more expensive doesn't make it any better than the others!

I'm sure several of the brands make newborn starter packs too

I plan to breastfeed but have bought a pack of the ready made formula bottles to take to the hospital just incase. I got these from Tesco:

Cow & Gate 1 First Milk Starter Pack 6X70ml Ready To Feed Liquid

You'll need some form of ready made for in the hospital if you end up using it as you can't and probable won't won't to be arsed make them up and sterilise your bottles. Most brands do packs that have screw on teats that can just be thrown away once used. That bit gets expensive but hopefully you won't be there long and/or bf will be successful and you won't need many.

Otherwise, the market is heavily regulated and all of them are similar nutritionally, so baby will come to no harm on any of them. Morally and ethically they're made differently so if that's a consideration for you then that will form your decision more than nutritionally.

Choose one you can get hold of at short notice in case you ever run out and need to nip out quickly for one. Little point using Aldi if your nearest Aldi is 25 mins away and you only go once a week for example...

Personally I'd just choose (and did) one of the standard first stage infant milks and stick with it. There is no need to move off this first stage for the whole time they're on formula - no need to move up the stages as that's just a marketing ploy for the companies as they're not allowed to market first stage legally. They can draw attention to their brand, and entice people to buy it by making and marketing follow on milks.
