Flu contact

Need a bit of advice. I'm 32 weeks pregnant. My husband and I have both received this years flu vaccine.
My husband is a hospital doctor and was on a night shift last night, he was looking after a patient in very close contact and the patient has now come back flu positive. If he did contract flu from this patient he wouldn't be contagious yet so now we're in a position where we need to decide if I should leave the house today and go to my mothers for a few days to wait and see if he develops any symptoms.
What would you do in my position?

I would probably wait and see if he starts showing any symptoms. You could have come in to just as close contact with someone with flu in the supermarket.

I am 33 weeks and have had flu and covid in the last month and my body worked though it and baby is fine

Fingers crossed you avoid it

Firsttimemam123 · 06/01/2023 15:55

Thanks @ohhollyfred glad to hear you got through covid and flu with no issues. It's an anxious time to be in the third trimester at the moment with all the different bugs flying around! Stay safe x

Just out of interest @ohhollyfred were you vaccinated against flu and covid?

Yes up to date with covid and had flu same time as whooping cough at 20 weeks

mummyh2016 · 06/01/2023 18:11

I didn't think there was a test for flu?

Ell95 · 06/01/2023 18:24

You'll be fine. I had the flu when I was 8 months pregnant, unvaccinated as I was due to get vaccinated that day but came down with it so had to wait until it went to have the flu jab. it wasn't very nice and I definitely felt it but the baby was fine and so was I

Surprisepregnancy1 · 06/01/2023 20:33

I’m going against the flow here - I have had flu in the last month (didn’t get vaccine in time as I had the flu by the time I was supposed to get it) and ended up in hospital with pneumonia at 22 weeks pregnant. I have Athsma which didn’t help. Me and baby are fine now but I have had several courses of strong antibiotics and I got quite a fright. Also I’m still exhausted. My husband is super fit and he was in bed for days and developed a chest infection so also needed antibiotics. Genuine flu can be awful. If you have the option of a few days R&R with your mum, I say go for it.

Cantbebotheredwithchores · 06/01/2023 20:40

Are you staying in the house and not seeing anyone?
Your probably more likely to catch something going out and about. You have had for flu vaccination.
I say this as a nurse and we come into contact with all sorts of nasty bugs and come across patients with Cdiff, MRSA, flu, covid on a daily basis. Sometimes all 3 on the same day.
Is your mam going out and about also? Are you isolating from your husband until after you give birth?
It is a worrying time with all these bugs but unless your totally self isolating then you could catch it anywhere.

DiddlyDoris · 06/01/2023 20:48

Maybe I'm missing something but if your husband is a doctor wouldn't he be best placed to know rather than asking some random and presumably unqualified strangers online?

Firsttimemam123 · 06/01/2023 22:57

@DiddlyDoris my husband was actually asleep at the time of my original post, as he's back on nights tonight. I was waiting for him to wake up to have a frank discussion with him about it and my mind was in overdrive trying to decide what level of risk I'm happy with when it come to flu. I suppose asking on here was a way to have some control over the situation and to get some impartial advice.

@Cantbebotheredwithchores no of course I don't plan to self isolate for the next 8 weeks that would be utterly ridiculous. I appreciate that anyone could pick up covid or flu anywhere at any time, but if that did happen It would be out of my reasonable control. In this situation we have a known high exposure and a real chance to mitigate a big risk

Thanks @Surprisepregnancy1. I'm so sorry to hear you were so unwell. I think you are right! It's not worth the risk. So with all that considered I have decided to stay with my mam for a few days while we see if he develops any symptoms, hopefully he'll be fine and we can go back to normal in a few days.
