I've had back problems since I was a teenager (now 34) I'm 17 weeks pregnant and have been experiencing really bad pains in my coccyx/lower back. It's got so bad that I can't sit down for longer than 30 mins and it's hurting lots when I do my pelvic floor exercises. My hips have started hurting in bed too, I've heard about SPD and wondered if this could be the start and if there's anything I can do to prevent it such as Alexander technique or osteopathic treatment.

hi spd is really annoying and although you might not be able to prevent it totally you can do things to manage it during pregnancy. Take a look at the pelvic partnership website www.pelvicpartnership.org.uk/ which has loads of useful advice. It also has details of the symptoms so you can see if yours match what they say. I had spd in both pregnancies, but only later on, and felt it more in the actual pelvic area, but I'm not an expert so I couldn't say if yours is spd or not.

Whatever it is, perhaps it would be good to go and see your gp or midwife about this specifically, so that if things get worse later on you've at least flagged it up.

Some people find osteopathy works wonders for them but I didn't find it helped much for me. I'm about 18 wks pg with my third child and starting to get twinges again, so this time I'm thinking about seeing a private physio or a chiropractor - but only ones that specialise in pelvic stuff.

hope that helps

He Gilly

Just read you post and thought I would stress, there are other things that cause these kinds of symptoms - not just SPD. You really should get it checked - a good chiropractitioner should be able to give an accurate diagnosis - especially if you have existing back problems.

My Doctor thought I had SPD at 18 weeks, but when I went to the Chrio, it turned out I had dislocated the SP jointed without realising it (5 years ago they reckon ) because of a pre-existing back complaint.

I can also testify, having had a fall at Xmas and damaged my sacro-iliac joint (the one at the back) that this can do the trick too!

Good Luck
