Progesterone Pessaries

Looking for past experiences just to reassure me.

I have a short luteal phase, so when I took my ovulation tablets (clomid), I was told if I was to become pregnant I would need to take progesterone pessaries for 12 weeks. Anyway, I am now a few days off finishing these pessaries and I am a little nervous about stopping them. I mean I don't have a choice as I have no more to take - but just wanted some reassurance that 12 weeks is enough time and all will be fine!

Of course, I can't contact my old fertility specialist as they discharged me, so if anyone has any experience I would love to hear.

Thank you x

I was also nervous about coming off the pessaries (after initially hating them I then was terrified of giving them up!). But all was well and I had no issues and carried to term. If you're really concerned could you speak to your GP?

Thank you, this is great to hear - honestly I hate taking them too, but it feels like an extra protection. I read somewhere that once the placenta attached you are good, which looks like mine is.

To be honest I dont think my dr would have a clue haha!! Thank you for letting me know about your positive experience!

I also took progesterone pessaries for 12 weeks as it was an Ivf pregnancy and they give them to you to make sure your progesterone levels are high enough in the early weeks (because you don’t ovulate during ivf). I was nervous to stop them but by 12 weeks the placenta will have taken over and you don’t need them - wishing you a happy and healthy pregnancy 😊

Same here - IVF pregnancy three years ago, was terrified to come off my medications (including progesterone) at twelve weeks, did it, DD is perfect.

Don't worry - you'll be fine, as scary as it feels!

i was on them up until 16w due to recurrent mc, as was a friend (same reason) who’s a few weeks ahead of me. She was the same as you and felt very nervous stopping the progesterone, whereas I didn’t think twice about it and was glad to be shot of them. It was probably because I had a previous loss whilst on them so sadly I knew from experience they weren’t some magic wand that prevented a mc, they just basically optimise conditions in there for the developing pregnancy. Now you’re past that stage, no point in taking medication that serves no purpose to you or baby. Congratulations!

Hi ladies,
sorry to jump on the thread and I can offer no advice, but I was wondering if you could share your experience with the progesterone. I am pregnant (not IVF) after 3 miscarriages and have been prescribed progesterone pessaries. I'm only just over 6 weeks but I feel sick, tender breasts, extreme tiredness and bloat. I know these can all be pregnancy symptoms but I can't help but think they are all side effects from the progesterone and that are potentially masking another miscarriage. I guess what I am hoping is that someone might share their experience with side effects.
Apologies again for jumping on the thread.
x

So I was on progesterone for 10 days after I ovulated so had time on them before I was pregnant. I think the progesterone made my boobs more painful and a lot bigger but the other symptoms you have said, I only got when I was pregnant x

@Ldougal92 thanks so much for taking the time to reply. Ahh ok that's good to know, I hope that's the case 🤞. Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy x

Just come off the progesterone too at 12 weeks today. Ivf pregnancy. Really really scared hope it will be okay. Reading this post for reassurance too! Is all well with you coming off @Ldougal92?

Morning!! Yes currently 6.5 months pregnant :) your placenta will be doing all the work now so I wouldn’t worry 💜💜💜💜 when’s your scan?

So glad all is well with your pregnancy! My 12 week scan was on Monday all looked good forgot to mention the progesterone to midwife though... Just finished the remaining ones and come off them yesterday. Your reply is reassuring though so thank you so much🙂

Another reassuring story here - I took progesterone pessaries for an ivf pregnancy and now my gorgeous baby is a year old ☺️
I was so nervous to stop initially, then after a few days it was such a relief not to have to mess around with them anymore. I do not miss them at all!
They will have you on them for longer than is actually necessary, as your placenta is already well established. Wishing you all the best for a smooth rest of pregnancy and an easy birth xx
