Positive stories with a low lying placenta?

Just wanted to ask if anybody had any positive experiences of a low lying placenta and then c-section as a result?

Low lying placenta was detected at 20 weeks scan and was advised that there was a 90% chance that it would move up. I ended up having a growth scan at 32 weeks and was told then that it still hadn’t moved and that it was 13mm away from my cervix. I have a scan at 36 weeks to see if it’s moved out of the way but to be honest, the consultant was a bit vague with what came next. She did say to monitor for bleeding, but thankfully I haven’t had any so far (I’m 34 weeks now) and she also discussed the possibility of a C-Section if it hadn’t moved by my 36 week scan.

I have so many questions! Is it my placenta likely to move up at this point? If I need a C-Section, when is this likely to be? Are there any higher chances of problems during the section?

This is my second baby but I completely in the dark! :(

My placenta didn't move until 38 week scan 😀 then completely clear for a vaginal birth x

@Louiseem thats great to hear.

Im tagging along, I’m only 22 weeks, but the placenta is anterior and just covering the os. No gap at the minute.

@ToadstoolFairy I got told it needed to be at least a 3cm gap for a vaginal birth. I don’t know anything else, other than if it doesn’t move it would be Caesarian.

I had one, it moved eventually

prettylittlethingss · 03/01/2023 11:19

I had a low lying placenta - it was still low at 32 weeks but had moved at 34 weeks! I had bleeding at 28 weeks too. Everything was all fine.

However a lot of women have really positive births with c sections! You'll be in good hands.

Best of luck!

@Louiseem That’s really positive to hear! I’m hoping there’s still a chance mine will have moved.

@Blue2020 Hiya! I know it’s fairly common but it’s nice to know I’m not the only one going through these things. 3cm?! I was told 2cm! 😯 But actually thinking back, my consultant mentioned something about the doctors having the final say on how far away it needs to be so who knows! I’m trying to come around to the idea of a c-section but it’s the not-knowing that is the biggest pain at the moment.

@Squabbledee @prettylittlethingss so far it’s sounding good! Fingers crossed!

I had a low lying placenta up until birth. I had an emergency c section, it was horrific.

I had placenta previa marginalis with a 13 mm gap at 28 weeks and vasa previa with a velamentous insertion. I had a planned section at 36 weeks after an uneventful 2nd and 3rd trimesters and the baby was fine. I knew from 20w I would have the section as they don’t expect vasa previa to move.
I don’t think there are any downsides to either form of delivery after a placenta previa diagnosis. You will have had extra checks so if they let you labour you know they are confident it will be fine. If you have a planned section you benefit from risk reduction. Either way it will be fine.
If they say the placenta has moved enough to avoid a section I would definitely suggest asking whether they have excluded vasa previa (which can only be done by vaginal doppler) as mine was missed 8 times.

ToadstoolFairy · 03/01/2023 12:13

@1994girl Did you try and have a vaginal birth? Or did you have to have the C-Section under other circumstances?

@Eixample I’ll definitely get them to check for vasa previa - thank you. It all sounds really overwhelming … as long as baby gets here safe that’s all that matters but it feels I’ve just been left with hardly any information with what could (potentially) be a traumatic birth. I’ve been told to come up straight away if I bleed (they sounded a bit shocked that I hadn’t tbh) but I don’t know if that would be to monitor or whip baby out? I think I’d feel more at ease if I knew when a section would happen. I had an assisted vaginal birth with DC1 so I’ve know idea when planned sections go ahead, especially with a low lying placenta.
