Offered induction….

I’m 39 weeks tomorrow and this morning went in for reduced movements, however I did explain they’ve been more of a change in strength rather than no movements at all, I have felt baby but not as strong or as much the past few days.

I was on the monitor for 2 hours and met the ‘criteria‘ I think I was on the line, they offered me two opinions either a induction today or to come back tomorrow for another monitoring and they’ve requested a urgent scan. After initial panic I opted for the monitoring and urgent scan, but now I’m panicking I should have went for induction incase there is something wrong with the baby 😔. I had a induction for my first 2 years ago and it was long but active labour was only 8 hours after they broke waters, for reduced movements again at 37 weeks her HR dropped a few times in labour and she was born with cord round her neck but I’m not sure if this was why she had reduced movements, it’s all abit of a blur now.

Has anyone opted for the additional monitoring before? Also has anyone been induced twice? Was the second time any quicker?

My bump has always been measuring 2 weeks behind I’ve had two growth scans because of this (last growth scan 36 weeks) baby is big but not massive (looking at 8 pounds at 40). As i’m writing this I feel I should have taken induction!

Thanks for reading xx

I turned down an induction at 37 weeks and accepted daily monitoring. I only got as far as 27+3 as I had pre eclampsia.

Sorry no answers to your questions but if they had real immediate concerns I’m thinking they wouldn’t have let you go home and would want to continuously monitor?

Maybe see how you feel in the next few hours and if you feel you’d rather be induced than wait until tomorrow for further monitoring give them a call and see if induction today is still an option. Go with your gut.

Good luck x

Yes I suspect they would have worded things much more strongly if they were really worried. I would lie down in the dark with a cold drink and something sugary and feel for the kicks.

If you feel reassured, give it the 24h. If still worried, call, pack and go back in.

I have been in for reduced movements, it is so worrying and the weight of responsibility is so heavy. I am sorry you’re in this. I agree with pp, trust your gut.

I am discussing induction for a different issue, my midwife said people who have been in labour before don’t tend to need so much intervention to get labour going and their labour tends to be quicker.

I’ve clicked on a “similar threads” link and found this post https://www.mumsnet.com/talk/am_i_being_unreasonable/4659592-to-actually-expect-an-induction

How busy is your maternity hospital? If a big busy one, where that sort of delay is likely, then if I was you I think I would go back today to get things started sooner.

Sounds like waiting and monitoring was the right decision for you, you can always go back and ask them to start induction if things change. Sometimes there's a bit of a wait for a space on the labour ward if you're having a non-urgent induction anyway.

Thank you for your replies!

I’ve felt the baby today not as strong but the movements are there. I’m going back tomorrow for the monitoring unless things change and movements slow down!

I just wonder why do they offer induction if it isn’t actually needed? Is it the unknown cause of reduced movements? Xx

I was inducted at 39+1 after three episodes of reduced movements.

My labour was exactly the same length was my first (natural) labour fifteen years prior - seven hours.

I think this is something you should ask them if they offer an induction again tomorrow. I’ve recently had a growth scan at 36w which has shown slight reduction in growth velocity. Fluid levels and placenta blood flow fine. I will be having another scan in a weeks time and was told if there was still a reduction I would likely be offered induction as a precaution.

They offer induction bc it’s a risk. They can’t quantify the risk, is it big, imminent? etc, so they are cautious.

I wouldn’t postpone induction if I were you. How are you going to monitor the moments during the night until tomorrow?

i was too induced, bc of no growth, and it was painful, but better than the risk to baby

CristinaNov182 · 02/01/2023 17:36

There are kick counting apps, makes it easier to see if you get the min 10/hour and the pattern, if there are fewer and fewer etc.

PumpkinDart · 02/01/2023 17:53

Hey OP, if there was a more significant risk I'm sure they'd have scanned you there and then. Go for the monitoring and the scan then you can make a balanced decision. Chances are even if you accepted induction today you'd be plodding around waiting for things to start in a similar boat tomorrow if your last experience is anything to go by. Sending love and I hope that you and baby are well 💐

Yes, she could still be waiting to be induced this evening, but she’d be wearing a monitor for the baby’s heart.

Lightsbonaza · 02/01/2023 18:46

My second induction was a lot faster! Just needed a pesarty and the rest happened by itself. I wish you luck!

Indeed, and if that was absolutely necessary medically I'm sure that the option would have been stressed as the preferred option.

There are kick counting apps, makes it easier to see if you get the min 10/hour and the pattern, if there are fewer and fewer etc.

Counting 10 kicks in an hour is an out of date method and is dangerous. Please don’t advise mums to count the number of kicks.

Changes in the pattern and strength of movements is a more reliable method.

A quick google brings up this study, if you’re interested to know more:

@chinchillin I hope baby is well and your induction is underway
