Hi,
Im 19 weeks and I felt my cervix last night and I can comfortably fit my index finger inside (I’d say from tip of finger to first joint) - is this normal?

I’ve had no previous pregnancies or miscarriages.

Not sure whether your cervix opens a certain amount during pregnancy or whether I need to speak with my midwife?

Advice / insight appreciated

Thanks

Call you midwife or hospital and explain what you’ve written here. They’ll want to examine you I’d imagine. In the meantime leave your cervix alone!

I would defo speak to midwife or maternity triage at the hospital. I personally wouldn't know what my cervix was meant to feel like so best leave it to the professionals - don't worry I'm sure everything's fine x

Why on earth would you try to insert something into your cervix - are you trying to induce a miscarriage Shock

I think you shouldn’t do that again but as pp said call your midwife for advice.

Thanks, I’ve had previous nabothian cysts around my cervix so my gynae (gynae prior to pregnancy) did advise I check every month or so and that’s just when I noticed.

I just didn’t want to call and make a fuss if it’s totally normal for your cervix to dilate some during pregnancy as the NHS is obviously on its knees at the moment!

I would contact midwife and say this to her, explain that you were advised to check your cervix and ask if you should continue checking while you are pregnant because I don't think that is something you should be doing during pregnancy, midwives do that sometimes to encourage labour which you obviously don't want at this stage

IT IS NOT NORMAL for cervix to dilate during any part of pregnancy except the labour. Please call your midwife or hospital immediately. If it really is a dilated cervix at this stage, you could be having cervical incompetence.. please go get checked, Labour rooms and antenatal assessment units are meant for this.. it's not burdening the NHS

My gynae advised me to hold off on a cervical smear until after pregnancy so probably best to establish whether this self check is advised during pregnancy or if your obstetrician/ midwife can do it as part of your routine appointments. Please go and get seen, the NHS won't crumble over one cervical check up/ reassurance scan and it could make all the difference to you.
