I had my 4d scan yesterday and it turns out my little chap is breech, although I guessed that anyway from the kicks I have been getting i would say he has been breech for a good 4 weeks! the question is what is the likelyhood of him turning? and what can I do to help him along!

I'd say theres a chance he could turn you do have another 12weeks to go, sorry to remind you!! I'm not an expert but maybe some gentle exercise may encourage him to move, you could ask your gp or midwife whether they have any ideas, or any particular exercises you could do to help. Thats all i can think of at the moment..be back if i have any other thoughts!!

TLSM, I wouldn't worry just yet, there is plenty of time for baby to turn.
I know at least 4 people now who have had a baby turn after 34 weeks.
You can actually help him along by turning yourself upside down! Not as crazy as it sounds actually- if you can put a cushion on the floor and lie your head on it, with your hips/legs up on the sofa that can help.

TLSM, meant to say on the antenatl thread but got waylaid, I have a scan every two weeks, baby was breech at my 26wk scan, head down for my 28week scan and then breech again at the hospital last week(30weeks), so it's still changing a lot at the moment.

Minde turned at 33 weeks - it was the most bizarre thing I have ever felt in my life. Bear in mind that he was 10lb6 when he was born - and I didn't have a particularly big bump. Think Alien.......!

Peachy · 03/02/2008 22:21

DS1 turned at 34 weeks, although he was small. This one was ceph at the last check (28 weeks) but I think is currently transverse- hope he'll shift hisa rse forthwith . Sure he will, still a while to go yet.

Old advice would have it that chores that involve things like scrubbing the floors on your knees will encourage a baby to turn, may be worth a go?

There is plenty of time for him to turn, and statistically he most likely will. That said you might have a contrary one like my DD who decided whe wanted to stay breech right up till the end (although I still had a home birth with independent midwives - breech doesn't HAVE to mean a CS ;)).

The NHS won't start worrying till 36 weeks, but (because?) by then he's much less likely to turn independently. If you want to maximise the chances of him turning now, find a chiropractor skilled in the Webster technique (this looks for asymetry in the mothers pelvis and tries to remove it - allows abdominal muscles to relax and maximise space for baby to turn) or look into accupuncture / moxibustion (there's an accupuncture point near your little toe - some studies have indicated that burning herbs near it help the baby to turn). Neither of these will force a baby to turn if it's breech for a reason (placental position, length of cord, etc).

Other things to try at home include trying to entice him to turn by "attracting" him to a head down position (shine a torch and play music where you want the head, sit in a warm bath with a bag of frozen peas at the top of your bump...).

If you want to do some reading, two books I found very useful were "Breech Birth" by Benna Waites and "Breech Birth: What are my options" by Jane Evans. The former has a section on ways to try and help your baby to turn.

Good luck, and try not to stress too much - there is plenty of time.

I had my 28 week check with the midwife this morning and she said he is transverse rather than breech she also measured me and I am measuring massive for dates I am 28+2 but am measuring 34!!! She said he has loads of time to turn but due to his size and she can feel I am all baby it may be harder for him oh well what will be will be!

You still have plenty of time, some babies even decide to turn when you are actually in labour, don't give up hope you have 12+ weeks yet.

Hi TLSM, my dd was breech til about 36 wks then turned, I was told sitting on an exercise ball (one of the big grey beach ball type ones, they sell them in Argos) would help turn her - don't know if that was what did it but it cant hurt, I used to watch tv sitting on it for an hour or so each day. This one was transverse at my last check-up at 28 wks but I'm pretty sure she's turned now (now 31 wks) so fingers crossed.

LOVEMYMUM · 04/02/2008 21:25

My LO turned a few days ago at 36 weeks. Hope she doesn't go breech again!

Mumblesmummy · 05/02/2008 11:35

I was actually going to ask this same thing. I'm just over 26 weeks and mine's breech too I'm not panicking just yet. I think I'll chill until about 35 weeks and then panic. I assume they move about a lot before then as everyone else has said.

It sound stupid but he's gotten VERY active the past few days and I wonder if he's sort of trying to turn? I don't know how difficult it is to turn in there.

loopylula · 05/02/2008 13:12

My DD was transverse at 34 weeks which had the opposite effect on my date measurements and made me small for dates coz she was basically sticking out the sides rather than the front, iyswim.

The midwife panicked and sent me for weekly scans because if she didn't turn it was a CS or nothing for me! Gladly she spun round to LOA at 38 weeks and we had a lovely birth, not a CS in sight, phew!

DoingItAgain · 06/02/2008 13:00

My daughter was breech until 36 weeks (I'd heard the scary word caesarean from the doctors if she hadn't turned) and went from being breech on the Friday to partly engaged on the Monday, it seems she thought she'd give us her best feature on her arrival and not show the world her bum! But on a positive if baby doesn't turn my sister had her first 2 children by breech vaginal delivery (supporting hospital) and all was well.
