Babies weight in scan

Stephanie226 · 29/12/2022 19:09

How accurate have people found scans to be at showing their babies weight? I had a 4D scan done today and she said baby is already 3lb 14 and I'm only 29 weeks. I'm petite at 5ft 2 and size 8 so I'm panicking about him getting really big. At my 28 week midwife appointment my bump measured 6 days behind 🤷🏼‍♀️ x

Following as I would love to know! I had a scan at 30 weeks and baby was 3lb 5oz, I’m also 5ft 3 and was an 8/10 pre pregnancy, but most of baby’s measurements are above 80th percentile, including 90th for abdomen so I’m worried baby is going to be huge!

AnnieApple123 · 29/12/2022 19:24

Totally inaccurate IME. A scan at 22 weeks put DS on the 95th+ centile and sent me into such a panic that he’d be huge and very hard to birth. He was born (at full term) on the 25th centile.

SpamIAm · 29/12/2022 19:26

They overestimated my baby's weight quite significantly. I think they're supposed to be fairly reliable if you're having regular scans coming out with the same sort of weight, but I wouldn't get worked up about a one off.

bigshoutingday · 29/12/2022 19:28

For me it was very accurate but I think there's a massive margin for error. I was scanned at 33 weeks and he was 5lb8. I think they say they put on half a pound a week towards the end, so expected him to gain 3.5lb over the next 7 weeks. He came out at 40+5 weighing 9lb2, so almost exactly as predicted. Im pretty petite as is DH so I was a bit worried too. He was much easier to push out than his 7lb sister, although maybe part of that was being a second baby and my body knowing what to do.

DoubleGauze · 29/12/2022 19:29

My estimate was wrong too. I had several scans between 34-42 weeks. The final estimate was 8lb. He was 6lb at birth.

BabyMomma2021 · 29/12/2022 19:31

For me it was very accurate but as a pp has said, there is a huge variance and you'll likely get a full spectrum of replies.

Barbequebeans64 · 29/12/2022 19:31

I had a NHS scan at 34 weeks and he measured 6lb4. Came out day after his due date at 10lbs!

Kladebs · 29/12/2022 19:32

They were pretty much bang on with my first, said she'd be about 7lb and she was 6lb 12oz.
My last 2 both were predicted to be about 8lb. Was told because I'm petite they wouldn't go much bigger anyway 😂They were 9lb 10oz and 9lb 11oz.

Cuppasoupmonster · 29/12/2022 19:40

Spot on with mine to the ounce!

boogiejive · 29/12/2022 19:51

I don't believe the weight you've been given is accurate. And if the healthcare professionals did, they'd have intervened today.

Average weight at 29 weeks is 2.5lbs - they're saying your baby is 50% bigger.

I believe that the error margin on scans is accepted to be around 25% - both of mine were expected to be 8lbs+ and both were under 7lbs at birth.

Put it to the back of your mind, it's not correct and it's lost energy spent fretting about it.

I hope the rest of your pregnancy goes well.

Thanks for the honesty. It was a private scan and she actually said he's average so a few minutes passed and I asked her again as I knew that was big and she said yes that's normal 🤦‍♀️ thought about sending the report to my midwife but don't want to make a mountain out a molehill lol x

I would take it with a pinch of salt. At 36 weeks they said my baby was 7lb already and he was born at 39+4 weighing 7lb 1oz.

YoureAMeanOneMrGrinch · 29/12/2022 20:04

I had a scan at 36 weeks with my son and they said he was weighing 6lb 3oz. He was born at 40+6 weighing 6lb 4oz so I take what they say very lightly.

ricketybeauty · 29/12/2022 20:07

Completely out with mine. Spent last couple of weeks stressing me out about having a 9-9.5lber turned out to be 11.5lb and would have been disastrous if carried on with a vaginal birth.

GoT1904 · 29/12/2022 20:23

I'm currently experiencing this worry!

My scan at 28w showed baby at 3.3lbs.
30w was 4.5lbs and I'm back tomorrow for my next one! Consultant has been wanting to scan me every 2 weeks atm to keep an eye.

TheHopefulMum · 29/12/2022 20:28

In my recent experience, not accurate at all. DC3 was measuring 'big' from around 24 weeks and I was sent for numerous growth scans. The measurements are actually your bump not the baby when done by the midwife and as our LO was breech this of course meant that I was bigger as her head was under my ribs.

My final scam at 38 weeks baby was estimated at 7lb 8oz, I assumed maybe an 8lb baby if I went to term, which I did but she was only 7lb 2oz when born and she's still in first size clothes even now at 3 months, and still only weighs 10lb 8oz.

I wouldn't worry too much about it too much OP.

roughoption · 29/12/2022 20:29

I was told 6lb 4 at 38 weeks. Arrived at 42 weeks 10lb 8 Blush

Tomatobear · 29/12/2022 20:44

I think they can vary quite a lot. My son was estimated to be 10lb 11oz and was born 9lb 2 oz

Hatscats · 29/12/2022 22:05

I think they say 20% either side - I was told 9 pound 13 and she was born 8 pound 6! And was very glad I turned down the induction/section!!

justanotherlaura · 29/12/2022 22:10

My last scan at 38 weeks I was told he was 8lbs and estimated to be 9.5 at 40 weeks, he ended up being 7lb12. I think they go be femur length and he's 75th centile for length but 50th centile for weight so I think that skewed it

drV · 30/12/2022 05:06

Quite skeptical about growth scans here too. I have been having growth scans since 20 weeks for some other issue. My little one was at 50th centile at 24 weeks and suddenly jumped to 90th at 28 weeks; weighing 2lb10oz. I am petite too, 5'2 but my husband is 6'1 and muscular.. they said it could be genetic but did a GTT which came back normal. Had another scan at 32+3 which said the baby has fallen to 75th centile weighing 4lb 4oz. We got worried sick thinking she is slowing down but the doctor we saw after the scan told estimation of fetal weight has an error upto 20% 😵‍💫 so it could be on either sides of 4lb now..

Will only get to know the real weight once the baby is born..🤷🏻‍♀️

anotheronettc · 30/12/2022 05:22

Dr thought baby would would be 10-11lbs and get stuck. Induced me. He was 8 lbs 13
Only reason he got stuck was because I was so exhausted from the induction which took a week to work.
Would never worry about size again or be induced because of it.
But hindsight is a beautiful thing.

bananafarmer · 30/12/2022 05:26

Mine were wildly inaccurate. Estimated baby above 95th percentile. He was born 25th percentile and following that line. So nowhere near.

20viona · 30/12/2022 07:58

Mine have always been pretty good Iv had 2 babies both weighing 5lb 3oz and the scans the week before predicted 5lb 1oz and 5lb 6oz

Chanel05 · 30/12/2022 08:10

Completely inaccurate! My son was born almost 2lbs heavier than expected and was a week early.
