Pregnancy snacks/foods?

Hi all,

I’m looking for some suggestions on what I can buy as snacks/food during pregnancy?

im almost 13 weeks and seem hungry non stop, I haven’t had much nausea but have also not had any cravings either, more food aversions than anything. I’m looking for advise on what I can keep grazing on since I have found that I will get hungry about every 3-4 hours depending on what I eat. I now have to eat just before I go to sleep to keep me going through the night but as soon as I wake I need to eat straight away.

Im due to do an online shop and wanted to know what I can/should pick up.

I don’t eat peanut butter so when I see people having fruits/veggies dipped in peanut butter it’s not something I would eat (but I do eat peanuts). I also don’t eat celery. I have been totally off carrots (one of my aversions).

I have decided to buy some seeded bread, wholewheat pittas and wholewheat couscous to try and keep me fuller for longer. I wanted to make up some salads but have found the lettuces available where I shop is very limited in comparison to those ready made bags which they say to stay away from, so I will still make my salads but no fancy leaves.

I didn’t think finding things to eat would be so hard, never even thought aversions was a thing stupidly but at the same time I have the ability to still eat mostly everything but just need some help.

Thanks in advance

@Garman hahaha I said toasted sandwich because I intended to have a standard sandwich. My sandwich wasn’t set up for a hot one, it had salad in it but when I felt how hard the bread was, I realised it would either be a stale sandwich or I could just toast the bread and just have that bit toasted.

it wasn’t a comparison on toasties and a toasted sandwich, although personally I wouldn’t put salad and the likes of, in a toastie but in a toasted sandwich you often see salad (think subway) except they don’t toast the salad part, just the meat and cheese.

@Tropicaliyes they didn’t fill me up, but definitely kept me full enough until my next proper meal. This was when I was still trying to keep it from colleagues, so didn’t want to be seen eating constantly 😂.

@QueenOfWeeds ah that’s understandable, I hear of a lot of people having to do similar things just to hide it at first. I don’t work so I don’t have to worry about that especially since I don’t speak to my family and don’t have friends so the only one around me 24/7 is my partner who knows I’m pregnant so I can just be as relaxed as I want or need. I seem to get hungry every 3-4 hours if I don’t eat a substantial meal, if it is substantial then I can go maybe about 6-7 hours. It’s weird how cyclical it has become because before i got hungry at random times.

mini soreen loaves! great for snacking on the go and a bit of a sugar boost.

Haha I never thought to do a toastie in a frying pan! How silly of me! I would do that with the bread untoasted right?

got some yoghurt but it never fills me up, and granola I’m not too keen on but I bought a box and will have to dress it up.. maybe I just don’t like that particular one.

and cashews I have always disliked! It’s a soft nut and I don’t like the way they feel in my mouth🤦🏽‍♀️ Same with Almonds and walnuts, I don’t like peanut butter because of that feeling but I will eat peanuts lol

and chocolate I have been off of, it’s weird but I think I’m starting to get to the point now where I’m okay with the idea lol.

Try full fat 10% Greek yogurt if you haven’t already - the standard natural never fills me up, but Greek does (and it’s good for you!).

@SpringTime2023 i have actually decided to cut down on the full fat stuff especially if I am going to eat a lot more so I have been going to low fat items as best as I can now so I don’t have to worry about the additional calories

@QueenZoflora soreen loaves are quite packed of sugar, I’m not a fan of things that have the sweetness of fruits with the addition of sugar and sometimes they even add syrup AND sweeteners just so you can really crash on sugar! I’m trying to make sure I don’t put myself at risk of Gestational Diabetes

Haven’t read full thread so apologies if it’s been mentioned, but you need to butter the outside of the bread before putting it in the frying pan. You won’t regret it.

SalviaOfficinalis · 04/01/2023 16:40

Btw full fat is not bad as there are lots of fat soluble vitamins in dairy products. Low fat things often have more sugar to make them taste nice.

Tropicaliyes · 04/01/2023 17:32

@SalviaOfficinalis oh no it wasn’t mentioned to butter the outside, what does that do? Make it crispier? Also I know the sugar content goes up for low fat items which is why I make sure to check the sugar now.. for the cheeses though it has no added sugar at all and is just made with skimmed milk instead of full fat milk but otherwise no added sugar.

I noticed I bought some low fat coleslaw a few weeks back and when I tried it, it was sweet, I noticed it had added sugar and was baffled but this led me to check the regular ones and they also had sugar in it! It seems an ingredient not needed in such an item! Since then I have found sugar lurking in almost every item it is crazy! I bought some pure cereals, no added sugar no nothing and they taste truly awful!😅🤦🏽‍♀️. I thought I was cutting out refined sugars but it turned out I wasn’t lol

Full fat dairy products are more satiating and would keep you fuller for longer. I would rather have full fat yoghurt than the watery thin low fat stuff

Tropicaliyes · 04/01/2023 18:19

@dementedpixie to be fair I was vegan so went from having those thin fake yogurts made of nut water or cheeses made from oils, potato starch and other nonsense so I actually don’t mind the thinner products because I’m still at that point where it is just nice to have the real deal again. Also depending on what I eat it with it can be as filling as other stuff for me.. I usually add them to the side of meals so I’m already near full anyway.
