Extreme nausea

Hi everyone.

I’m 10 weeks pregnant with my second and over the last few days have suddenly gone from just feeling a bit sick when I haven’t eaten to full blown can’t get out of bed, can’t eat or drink, sounds and movement make me feel ill, extreme nausea and some vomiting (once a day for two days and twice so far today). The doctor prescribed me Cyclizine today, which I’m about to take and hope it works.

How’s everyone else that has had similar got on with this? How long did it last? Did Cyclizine work or did you end up having to try other meds? Did anyone else’s not start until 10 weeks?!

My pregnancy with DC1 was so smooth sailing physically and this had been even easier so far, so I just did not expect it, it seems to have come out of nowhere. I did read that morning sickness can be heightened by stress, of which I’ve been under a lot, but surely not to this level?

Would just be nice to hear others’ experiences and connect with others going through it.

xx

I’m so sorry op, might be worth checking out the hyperemesis threads- lots of support on there.

cyclizine helped me to some extent, not throwing up as much and being able to keep some food in. Unfortunately it did not help with the nausea and from i hear from other women, this seems to be the case.

resting can help as moving aorund, being stressed busy etc can make it worse. As for when it will go, hopefully soon for you - mine was pretty much gone by 16 weeks.

just try to stay hydrated and eat little but often

I suffered from hyperemesis gravidarum with my first, it could be the start of that. But with HG I had it from about 5 weeks pregnant all the way to the end and it was vomiting all day long and having to basically constantly be snacking on something just to keep myself going. I know it's probably the last thing you want to do but try eating a few bites of something every 30 mins or so; biscuits, chocolate, snacky food etc. And sips of water throughout the day. Really hope it gets better for you! Xx

SkyBlue20 · 28/12/2022 19:15

Thanks both. Really hoping it isn’t the start of HG 😭 I mainly just want to be able to get out of bed and parent a little bit, my poor DH must be exhausted and my DD keeps trying to get me to get up 💔

The doc did say to call back if I don’t feel significantly better tomorrow morning and he’ll prescribe something else and though there were ketones in my urine, they were low enough for now, for us to try and get some medicine that works to allow me to eat and drink some more.

I really don’t know how people with full blown HG do it, you’re such warriors!

Does sound like HG. I had it throughout all my pregnancy and spent a good 4 months in and out of maternity day unit having IV fluids. Lost 2 stone too! Hope the meds do help, at one point I was on a cocktail but they unfortunately didn't help. I did get to a point where I could eat water based foods like a simple salad or some fruit. Sending hugs, it's a rough time (still can't stomach certain food 🤢)

SkyBlue20 · 28/12/2022 21:58

Thanks @HiKelsey, I’m sorry you had it so badly 😢

I’ve just managed to eat a bagel (over the course of about an hour) but not too sure how well that’s going to sit, let’s see. Got my first proper Cyclizine down me too so am being hopeful (though equally very aware I could be back at the doc in the morning). If I can just summon up the energy to have a bath tomorrow, not even wash my hair, that would be a win - I have my booking appt and am dreading the journey and the sitting around waiting 🤢

First thing on a morning, Dr told me before I even went for a wee or got up take my anti nausea meds then. Wait 15 minutes minimum then get up.

It was awful, my mum had to wash my hair for me a few times and help me in and out the bath. But it was so worth it when my daughter arrived and totally forgotten (apart from around certain foods)

I also had HG and had to methodically take meds every 8 hrs on the dot
set my alarm for 5am and go back to sleep otherwise i culsnt get up
it deffo peaked at 9 weeks and i ended up needed fluids in hospital
cyclizine was good until then but needed something else and that was like the dream after two medications
come off them around 17 weeks
deffo keep an eye on cllour of ur wee
rings docs back for further ketone checks
its a vicious cycle
less u drink worse u feel and darker ur wee gets
then u cnt drink and u get poorliy

@SkyBlue20 change your booking appointment to a phone, explain why and they will be accommodating. You can always go in and give bloods when feeling a little better

cyclizine can take some time to kick in. I felt super drowsy and slept for the first few days to a week.

as for eating. I used to think of it as trying to keep it down but then a dr said I need to be eating little and often and my body / baby would take whatever small nutrition from what I had eaten, so when I did throw up (if it wasn’t straight away) I didn’t mind as much bcos I knew my body had absorbed some nutrition

Hope things get better for you soon

SkyBlue20 · 30/12/2022 10:52

Thanks everyone for your experiences and advice. Just a little update from me: the Cyclizine seems to be really helping with the nausea, I’m not 100% clear but it’s allowed me to eat a little (living on bagels) and drink more and yesterday I wasn’t sick at all. Slowly beginning to feel a bit better as I manage to get more food down me and have made it downstairs today, which is a big step! Got to my booking appt yesterday, luckily didn’t have to wait around at all and then slept for 1.5hrs when I got home as I was wiped.
So getting there, hopeful that a couple more days of being able to stomach some food and not bring it back up will help me regain more energy and become somewhat human again 🤞🏼 Trying really hard not to be jealous of all of the people out and about enjoying this inbetweeny bit of Christmas and hoovering up leftovers! 🙈
Thank you again for all of your hints, tips and stories xx

I've been struggling with really bad nausea from week 4 and was being sick once or twice a day. Tried all the usual the natural remedies like ginger, peppermint, acupressure wrist bands, regular snacking etc... Finally went to the Dr around week 6 and they gave me cyclizine which levelled me out alongside regular snacking every 90 minutes. I actually had a whole week without throwing up over Christmas which was a huge bonus!

Now I'm week 10 and the nausea has kicked back in again with a vengeance :( Cyclizine twice a day and regular snacking every 90 minutes is barely helping. I'm not being physically sick as much, but just feel constantly nauseous again, so I'm really struggling with basic everyday activities like working, socialising, planning and traveling in the car. Has anyone tried anything other than cyclizine? Not sure if I should try something else so would love to know what's working well for others in the same position. TIA!
