Baby measuring 8 pounds at 34 weeks

Hi,

Just been for my midwife appointment where they measured my fundal and basically according to that baby is estimated at 8 pounds already at 34 weeks! I have a growth scan booked but am obviously really concerned as that's about as big as I'd want baby to be at full term.
Midwife said she didn't think I had a lot of fluid like some women who measure big so I'm really starting to get nervous. I am really keen to avoid induction due to friends and family having some horrific experiences but C-section doesn't overly appeal either because my husband only gets two weeks off work and will then be going offshore for work for at least 3 weeks.
Has anyone else had similar and had a normal weight baby?

My son measured about the same at the same gestation and he was 10.7 at birth.
Elective C-section as I'd struggled to birth his 9.3 sister previously

If you and your husband are tall it may be baby is also tall. My first DS was predicted to be 10lb, but was only 8lb 6, so long and skinny (looked like a frog, bless him!). I’m 5’9 and DH is 6’4 (and DS is now 6’8” 😁)

Lavenderleopard · 28/12/2022 13:14

Neither of us are particularly tall, I'm 5'7 and my husband is 5'9. I think I weighed about 8 and a half pounds at birth so would hope baby is similar at most. Will just have to see what the scan shows

I wouldn’t worry until they do the growth scan. Even they are not 100% but the fundal height is just a guide to see if you need further investigation so try not to worry til you need to x

Fundal growth is so inaccurate for size of baby. With my son I literally had 12 growth scans because of a small bump and he was 9lbs10! Nearly winded me when he was put on my chest, the delivering midwife was so confused as to where he'd been hiding. Positioning makes a difference too. Wait for your growth scan, my daughter at full term was 7lbs9 but I measured 30 weeks based on the chart, even the growth scan was over a pound out. See what the scan says and what they advise!

Also, for reassurance my heavier baby was my quickest delivery and easiest labour.

astronewt · 28/12/2022 14:57

You really really cannot estimate the weight of a baby from fundal height. Wait and see what the growth scan says, but they are often significantly out too.

J1290 · 28/12/2022 17:07

Our area doesnt even meadure fundal height anymore. Can be really inaccurate
id wait till ur scan wouldnt worry

Orangesare · 28/12/2022 17:11

I was sent for a growth scan because my fundal height was too small with my first. Growth scan was fine. I also had a late scan in labour because I was overdue and they were deciding what to do. Last scan measured him at almost a pound lighter than he actually was. The staff were really surprised in theatre how big he was and that was the reason labour had failed.
so I wouldn’t believe either.

TakeYourFinalPosition · 28/12/2022 17:14

I had eight growth scans; and had a full-term measuring bump from 30 weeks. We were preparing for a giant baby.

He was 7 and a half pounds. The margin for error with growth scans is huge, and it’s even bigger for fundal measurements. I was so worried. I couldn’t believe anyone who told me not to be, and I wasted so much of the end of pregnancy worrying about it. It was absolutely fine.

rickandmorts · 28/12/2022 17:22

I think growth scans are really inaccurate, they said my baby would be 7lb7 based on scans and she was 9lb4 so nearly 2 pounds bigger than what they estimated 😬

mondaytosunday · 28/12/2022 17:22

I have no idea what I measured when, but the midwife was concerned enough at 32 weeks to have me do a glacier tolerance test - I didn't as the initial sugar level was so high (I am now a type 1 diabetic). Anyhow baby was born via section at just under 37 weeks snd weighed 10 lbs 4 oz. Not chubby just long. But I had no issues with taking care of him - out and about as soon as we got home so don't worry on that score if you do need a section (complications aside).

1000yellowdaisies · 28/12/2022 17:26

Both my babies were supposedly measuring big at the later scans, so much so that DS was born by c section as they said he was at risk of shoulder dystocia, complications etc. Both were 7lb odd when born. Practically every friend i know who was told they were having a big baby ended up having a totally normal sized baby.
The estimates are massively inaccurate.

I had growth scans from 32 weeks. I was told at 32 weeks she was 7lb, then they said they put the numbers in wrong and she was 4lbs, had further scans all saying normal sized baby - likely 8lbs 8oz and she was 11lb 4oz at 38 weeks when I gave birth.

8lb 8oz estimate was at 37 weeks.

They don't know.

RandomMess · 28/12/2022 18:01

I'm teeny tiny in height and hips. Kept telling me I was NOT having a big baby as my fundal height was always behind the number of weeks.

DC was 10lb 6oz, it was actually fine and I was induced.

Daisy4569 · 28/12/2022 18:05

I had extra growth scans as my little one measured big, no issues during labour. He was 9lb (mostly legs!)

AriettyHomily · 28/12/2022 18:24

They don't use fundal height where I am anymore either.

itsme432 · 28/12/2022 18:34

My cousin was born weighing 10lb 4oz, some women just have big babies! Hutni wouldn't go worrying, baby may be smaller than predicted 😁

Lavenderleopard · 31/12/2022 14:14

Well I had my scan today and baby is actually about 5.5llbs just now, FH measurement is way off. I now have to go back because baby is measuring small compared to previous scans!
