Severe constipation HELP

Hello everyone,

I am severely constipated and have been since my three year old was born. But since becoming pregnant (7weeks) it’s worse than ever!!! I’ve been needing laxatives at every toilet visit this past two weeks and I know that’s not good for your colon function.
I have tried prunes, flax seeds, chia seeds, oatmeal every day, drinking lots of water. But nothing works!! I’ve also tried mild over the counter laxative but no results.
Today was the worst, I think all the straining caused some kind of prolapse. Something is not right in there :-(
I need your advice!!

Please - what can I do??!!

Op I can relate to this, I had it terribly with my first to the point of one day I just couldn't sit down. Second pregnancy I took fybogel from day one and I never suffered once, continued with water intake and had bran flakes each morning. Once you've passed this one, maybe start a new routine with taking a softener daily to try and prevent it again? I was so nieve before it happened to me but it is awful! If you are compacted, I found kneeling in a warm bath gave me some relief.

My midwife told me to soak prunes in pure fruit juice of choice and eat 6 daily. Did the trick for me.

exactly. I feel like I need to sort this blockage out and then try something new and do movicol from the start. The midwife had me on lactulose for a start which didn’t work hence why I’m just in day two with movicol.
I feel like I need to take Dulolax but that should be taken by night and I’m not sure I can wait a whole day for that since it’s just now morning. I’ve been successful with Dulcolax in the past, however it causes severe diarrhea but leaves the first part still hard which is awful.
I am waiting for advice from an online midwife now. So scared that this is permanent and I think I’ve also caused prolapse due to straining. 😭

Not sure if this is good for when you're breastfeeding (might need to check if you are nursing) but this works wonders for me.

Green smoothie - one lebanese cucumber, 2-3 short sticks of celery, 1 kiwi, half a green apple, can add or leave half a green capsicum, a generous handful of spinach. Top with water and blend - should get about 3 small serves. Drink a serve three times a day and by day two or three you'll be emptying yourself out.

Hope you find some relief soon, OP!

update: I was able to to the deed this morning after Movicol for two days. I did a deep squat and had a few sips of coffee. I might’ve been able to go a bit sooner but yesterday when I pushed and strained I feel something happening/loosening in my pelvic area. Some sort of prolapse 😩
Now when I try do the smallest push there’s always pee coming out too even though I’ve emptied the bladder before.
Anyone been dealing with prolapse?

Yes! I was prescribed laxido this summer by my GP but midwife was not sure if I could use it during pregnancy so I tried a milder laxative. But I got all clear by a doctor to use 1-2 doses laxido when needed. But I feel like I need it everyday! I’m on day two know, took one dose yesterday and took two today.
What was your dosage? And did you use it everyday for the entire pregnancy?

2 sachets a day until it got better.

Mine was caused by lack of drinking at work. I went off sick at 31weeks as I started contracting mid shift. It was better when I was at home.
At one point I was so impacted that I had to shit in a warm bath. That was the highlight of my pregnancy, closely followed by the time I was wretching so hard I pissed myself. Grim.

I swear by kiwi, only thing which seems to counteract the side effects of the iron tablets I'm on. Works for my daughter too when she's had problems with constipation.

Ok this is wayyyyy too much information but gosh has it helped me. I get to the point where I am about to go and it’s just stuck, I’ve found I can manipulate it out of me 🙈 if you feel around your anus you will feel the hardness. If you push on the skin next to your anus it REALLY helps get it out. If you try to go and then sit and relax for a while you’ll find your body also wants to get rid! I’ve also tried to go, come away from the toilet even with an enormous amount of pressure down there and within 10 minutes I get a feeling I need to rush back to the toilet. Sorry if that sounds disgusting but it has honestly helped me and I wish I had worked this out in my first pregnancy

PeanutButterFalcon · 26/12/2022 14:00

So you usually take a laxative that stimulates your bowel, which can cause your bowels to get used to needing it and slow down more. its bisacodyl. Senna is also a stimulant.

here’s a link that might help you to make an informed choice on what you might want to try taking.

additionally, if movicol is working you can increase the dose a lot more from 2 sachets initially and then drop down to keep it going

NnathalieN · 26/12/2022 15:09

I have movicol on prescription but I have hardy been using laxatives before pregnancy maybe just twice a year.
This blockage started a few weeks ago and I’ve been taking Movicol (2 doses) for two days. That worked and I’m so thankful! I just don’t know how to manage it from here. Should I do one movicol per day?
I can’t end up in this situation again really since I ended up with some sort of bladder prolapse yesterday.

Thank you for all your tips and tricks. So insert finger and then push from inside you on the rectum wall?
Or do you swirl around the finger a little and push from outside? (Around the anus area)

@NnathalieN you have to be at the point its about to come out (but stuck) if you feel the skin around the outside of the anus you will feel it. Apply some pressure and it helps guide it out. It might make more sense the next time you go…
