Renting while pregnant

Hi, I am currently living in a spacious 1 bedroom flat and due to renew the contract next month. In my previous contract says 'not allowed children to live in without permission' and now I pregnant, but the baby is coming in May next year and I'm thinking to announce the landlord after giving birth. Do you think he will ask us to leave just because the contract says no kids without permission? Thanks

I’ve heard of no pets but no children is wild! Surely that can’t be legal?

Sallyh87 · 22/12/2022 14:52

Maybe as it’s a one bed, they don’t want it over crowded with tenants with a bunch of kids. If you are good tenants then I can’t think of a reason they would want you out.

I wonder if they need to declare it for their home insurance? Not sure. Never heard of such of a line in a tenancy!

Don’t say anything until the baby is born. It’s none of their business whether or not you’re pregnant and you don’t need to be house hunting while 6 months pregnant.

@Mira91 honesty is the best policy.
We just had issues under similar circumstances.
If it is dictated in your tenancy agreement they have the right to evict and fee charge.
Landlords are the worst.
Get it approved in writing.

I suspect they'll be fine about it.

Where I think its come from is something like this - my sister rented her apartment while she was working abroad to a mum with a young kid. I think the child was 5 or 6. They caused SO much damage to the apartment in a relatively short period of time and a lot of the damage appeared to have been caused by the child doing things like apparently standing on the oven door, drawing on walls etc. If you've been a good renter so far plus the fact a baby won't cause that much mess/damage I think you'll be OK.

Thanks all for your replies. When this been advertised, in the bedroom, there were 2 beds, the child's bed(not a cot) next to the normal bed. The child was probably 2 years old or oldet cause we found drawings on the walls and we have repainted all flat on our expense 2 years ago. The flat has everything separated, bedroom, large living room, kitchen and bathroom, all separeted, so there is a decent space for 2 adults and a baby and it's not over 50's place.
I think they will understand, at the end we are in our 30's and it's normal to think for a baby.

🙄

No, landlords are human - some are shits and some are decent people.

If a child has lived there before there's no reason why they'd object to a baby, particularly if you look after the property & pay your rent on time. Landlords want to keep good tenants.

We were renting when we had DD1. We just told the landlord after she was born. He even brought her a present.
