Hello everyone,

I am 6 weeks pregnant and the most unfortunate thing happened to me yesterday. Was picking up my son from daycare. He was wet and had sand/dirt all over his jacket (they’ve been to a playground nearby). He threw himself at me for a hug and I got sand/dirt on my lips but also some in my mouth😩.

I can’t believe it happened and my anxiety is through the roof know!! A lot of cats in the area and they love the sandboxes kids play in.

Should I contact my provider and push for testing?? (I’m not sure they will since it’s not routine)

If it makes you feel better contact a health care professional. The chances are it's nothing. I would imagine the nursery inspect the sand pits before hand. I remember my friend telling me her daughter used to eat sand and aside from having 'a sore bott' she was fine. Take care

You need to take a breath and calm down. Your hcp (assume uk?) will do nothing. You will be fine. The kids aren't going to be playing in boxes full of cat shit.

It’s extra crippling since my friend lost her baby at 30 weeks due to toxoplasmosis. If they would’ve found out earlier she could’ve undergone treatment and baby might’ve survived.

I hate having this much anxiety and I wish I could just brush it off me.

I will be asking for testing but I’m pretty sure they won’t do it.

sorry for your friend.

the risk is very very small.
it is possible that you already had tox previously which would protect you now.

Hello,

First of all, I know what you're going through as I've had some pretty rough anxiety about all sorts this pregnancy due to a previous miscarriage.
This is from the NHS website:
'The chances of getting toxoplasmosis for the first time during pregnancy are thought to be very small.
Even if you do become infected for the first time during pregnancy, this doesn't necessarily mean your baby is in danger. In many cases the infection doesn't spread to the baby.'

You're likely way more on high alert about it because of what sadly happened to your friend. Do ask for testing and see what they say. It might be worth asking to be referred to the perinatal mental health team to help with the anxiety (this is what I ended up doing as it was crippling!). Hope you're ok x

Most people that have lived with a cat in the past will be immune. Have you ever lived with or worked with cats?

Try not to worry and talk to your midwife.

NnathalieN · 21/12/2022 07:38

I did grow up on the country side with sheep, horses and outdoor cats but I’ve read it’s only 14%-20% that are immune. I really hope I am!! But I don’t know.

Thank you for everyone’s concern. It’s hard when you try to do your best and then things happen that you really can’t control. But what are the odds of getting sand in your mouth when pregnant. Has literally never happened before so it kind of makes me wanna laugh too.
