What happens if you don’t stop blood thinners in time for labour?

looking for anyone who’s had to take blood thinning injections in the 3rd trimester.. I’ve been told they recommend I have them from 28 wks due to age and family history. Didn’t have them with previous babies but am a fair bit older now. Happy to take them but my issue is I had DD2 in under an hour, start to finish, without any warning and so them saying ‘you need to stop the injections within 24 hrs of delivery’ isn’t very reassuring! We are very rural, it’s an hour to a hospital and I’m panicking about having a spontaneous labour again, potentially after I’ve recently injected. Anyone been in a similar position and not had serious bleeding??

@Huffle sorry I don't have any experience but hopefully my comment will bump this post up for you.
I'm 15 weeks pregnant and have been on the clexane blood thinners 2 weeks now.
My prescription says to take up until 6 weeks post birth 😭 it's such a long way to go so hopefully I'll be fed more information on further appointments.
If you're concerned contact your midwife I'm sure they'll be more than happy to help put your mind at ease 💜 I hope you're ok xx

Hoping to bump this post up for you as I'm in the same situation as you, worrying about needing to stop before birth but had a spontaneous Labour with my first born.

Hopedully someone can answer this for us :)

It slightly increases your risk of bleeding. It also makes anaesthetists hesitant to administer an epidural and instead they offer different pain relief options.

@IDontDrinkTea It’s the bleeding I’m worried about, not worried about an epidural doubt I’d have time for one anyway 🤣 just worried about having this baby super quick again and no time to stop injections or get to hospital.

This was me... I had to inject twice a day for the whole pregnancy. When my contractions started I called the maternity ward to ask whether I should take my next dose or not (bearing in mind that it was early days and labour would most likely go on for many more hours) and after talking to haemotology I was told to still keep injecting. My total time in labour was 27 hours.

I always knew that I would almost certainly not be allowed an epidural due to this so I'd mentally prepared myself for that well ahead of time, and that was indeed the case - but if I hadn't already known that I think I'd have been upset to suddenly be told that.

I didn't bleed any more than most people I don't think, even though I needed loads of stitches.

Good luck with it, the hospitals are used to this and you'll be looked after (they'll probably alert haemotology when you arrive).

I took blood thinners and if you need an EMCS within 12 hrs of your last injection you have to have a GA rather than injection via your back.

I'm currently on blood thinners and will be until 6 weeks after birth, I was the same with DD both will be born via section and they didn't stop or change my thinners, they are tinzparain via daily injections x
