Do we need to buy a cot before baby is 6 months?

Hi everyone

We are planning on having baby in a next to me kind of cot for first 6 months. On that subject, any recommendations?

Do we need to get a big cot too? (We are going to get a cot-bed at some point so will last them a good few years).

Or do we just save money and get big cot from the off? And maybe get an inset for it so baby feels snug? Ahhh confused!

We loved our Snuzpod. Buy a cheap one on FB, and buy a new mattress.

Much nicer to be in a small cot when tiny

Buy an Uppababy vista pram. Use the bassinet as the cot. Baby gets to take their bed with them when they go out

The guidance is that baby sleeps in a clear cot. A insert isn’t safe for sleeping. I had a Moses basket which neither of mine used, they went straight into their cot bed which was set up in my room for the first 6 months. They looked tiny in there but slept much better than in the Moses basket.

I bought a snuzpod but ended up using the uppaby visa pram for naps as ds refused to stop breastfeeding in the early days. And sometimes I needed somewhere safe to drop him into for my sanity.

Breastfed newborns can be weird. They can, for the first few weeks, turn onto their tummies and shuffle up any surface, so I was too scared to use the snuzpod unsupervised.

We have a tutti bambini cozee next to me cot. It's been a wee godsend since I had a section. Makes it really easy for me to lift baby in and out for breastfeeding or if they need anything I can respond easily. Only challenge was getting out of bed by making my way to the foot of the bed first. It's pretty sturdy but also light enough that I can lift it with baby in it easily enough and it folds down/ goes up very easily. Only thing I would say is I found the mattress an unusual size so needed to buy the sheets from tutti bambini directly and they aren't the cheapest. But I'm very happy with it otherwise. It does up to 6 months and easily transported if you're staying elsewhere. I don't think you'd need a full crib etc immediately. We have one that was given second hand we just needed to replace the mattress in it otherwise I wouldn't have bought one yet and probably got one when ds was around 5 months old so he can practice sleeping in it. I'd be inclined to agree re:snoozepods ds is only 3 weeks and can make his way into the corners of the next to me when he's hungry/roll over so he's facing our bed. I'd be worried about him in anything that's not very straight and smooth at the sides.

Snuzpod is smaller than the chicco next to me - check how much room you have. We’ve had both and were both fine!
lots on here seem to confusing snuzpod with a sleepyhead - snudpod is just a bedside crib, not a “sleep nest” which aren’t recommended.
got both of ours second hand and replaced mattress!

Hatscats · 17/12/2022 03:53

Oh other option is to get a cot bed from the start and attach is to your bed - like a huge next to me! If I had the space I’d do it- there’s a Facebook group called U.K. co-sleepers and they’ve got pictures of how to do it safely.

meetmeinthespring · 17/12/2022 03:58

I had a bassinet side sleeper. Then moved bub into own room with cot when she was about 7 months.
She slept in a gro bag in the cot and a cellular blanket...depending on weather ..low tog or higher tog etc.

Side sleeper bassinets are so much easier! Bub feels next to you and you also get the security of them being in their own space, safely...

We were in the midst of selling our house when dd was born. We started with just a bassinet. By the time we actually sold and moved, we knew more about her and realized we didn’t need a cot at all.

my advice with all baby supplies is put the money in savings so that when you decide what you need you can buy it immediately. You are much less likely to end up with things that don’t get used.

Thank you everyone for your replies.

I think we are going to go for the Snuzpod and just keep the money in savings ready to buy a cotbed when necessary.

We used the snuzpod and didn't get nursery stuff inc large cot until our eldest was 1

LT2 · 17/12/2022 11:10

If I could go back a year and tell us to save our money and don't bother with a cot (or buy a cheaper one at least!) I would. Baby has co-slept from birth (we had a next2me crib as well, where he sometimes slept). From birth he has preferred being very close and we've not yet managed to get him to sleep in his cot (he's nearly 11 months). I wouldn't buy a cot until nearer 6 months if I were you.

SirSamVimesCityWatch · 17/12/2022 11:22

It's hard to plan. DD1 was only in her Moses basket for four weeks, then she moved to her cot (which was actually a cot bed) as she would, without fail, throw her arms out to the side as she was falling asleep, git the sides of her Moses basket and wake herself up.

One thing I would say is having it ready to go saves you a job later on.

alakwa · 17/12/2022 11:40

@Hatscats This is what we did. The side of the cot slid under the cot allowing it to be righty next to bed.

Progressed to cot in their room from 6 months, then cot without side as a toddler then straight to full size bed.

Fleabea · 17/12/2022 12:55

We have purchased a snuzpod to come in our room for the first 6 months and then buy a full-size cot bed for babies room that can last a few years. We liked the snuzpod as the top can be removed and brought downstairs for baby during the day. Amazon were recently selling them for £137 which seemed a really good deal.
