Just looking for some advice

I am 27 weeks pregnant on Tuesday with my third daughter, with my previous pregnancies my placenta has been to the back and on the left hand side, this is my first pregnancy where the placenta is at the front. Now I am aware that this obviously absorbs kicks so you don't feel as much but how do you monitor this as monitoring movements is crucial, I have felt movements and kicks, but I really don't feel much at all. I usually know when baby has moved as I get pressure when I stand or my bump hardens but I don't feel much kicks or anything, I don't know if this is something I should call about because I'm not necessarily having reduced movements when I can't feel a pattern of movement to know and understand if that makes sense?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, thanks x

Hi. I have an anterior placenta. I didn’t feel any movements at all until 25w and still then they weren’t very strong. Some days I felt nothing. By 28w baby is usually bigger than the placenta and so you should feel stronger movements. I would say that was the case with me and since 28w I have felt very strong and regular movements. They also say the patterns you should notice start at 28weeks. Give it a week or two and I’d say you will feel much stronger and more movements 😊 but of course if you are concerned call your midwife/triage.

My placenta was at the back for my pregnancy with DC1, and at the front with DC2.

I found with DC2 I did still get to know a recognisable pattern of movements, just a different pattern to DC1. Also by the time he was a bit bigger (32 weeks-ish?) I could feel him pretty well anyway, even through/around where the placenta was. I can remember at my 20 week scan the sonographer said DC2 seemed prrtty wriggly, so when he reached a certain size I'd suddenly go from not feeling much to feeling a lot.

It helped as well that it wasn't my first pregnancy so I knew what I was looking for - if you are on no.3 that will probably be true for you as well.

If in doubt though, always do call in about reduced movements.

Thank you this is very helpful! My midwife told me at my last appointment that I should be starting to get a routine with movements so to keep in touch with it but I'm like 'what movements😅' as I only started feeling them around 23-24 weeks🤣 I've got the midwife on Tuesday for my glucose test so if I am concerned I'll mention it, I'm focusing on the movements I can feel atm xx

No problem! I know how worrying it is and this is my first pregnancy so I just couldn’t wait to feel movements just to see what it was like! I do feel like the more noticeable movements started very suddenly for me and from then on I felt them daily so fingers crossed the same happens with you. I’m 34 weeks now and the movements are crazy and so strong! Definitely mention it at your appointment if you are still concerned. Good luck with your glucose test x

I am almost 29 weeks with an anterior placenta, it is my second but with the first child placenta was at the back. I do feel lots of movements but i am not sure there is a pattern. Sometimes i get proper kicks, others just stronger flutters. Sometimes it would go a whole day without feeling the baby and then i would feel her moving a lot during the night but it may be just because i am very busy, barely ever get a spare minute to sit down and think about the movements 🫣 so i probably wouldn’t know unless i get a strong kick from the inside haha but as the days go by they feel stronger. I suggest you always call the hospital if you have a concern. I would too do it if anything bothers me.

If in any doubt, always call the midwife/triage - they’re best placed to advise. I’ve got an anterior placenta, 29 weeks, and have been feeling a lot of strong kicks the last few weeks. It’s different for everyone of course but don’t think that the anterior placenta will cushion everything - baby is getting too big to be just tucked in behind. If worried, talk to professionals x

Definitely always seek advice if you’re worried.
I have an anterior high so did take a while to feel anything definite but it does get stronger. She’s 35 weeks now and I definitely feel it in the ribs and can still see her moving my stomach at times.
I find lying on my side can be helpful too as she often likes to kick the side I’m laying on or you can feel it better as there’s not so much cushioning.
