Is it right with girls you are really unwell - very sick ?
What symptoms do Girl mums have compared to boy mums.
I have 2 boys 13, 11. Both I had mild symptoms no real issues. bit of mild nausea few food aversions. This time I'm 8 1/2 wks. - very unwell, extreme sickness, extreme fatigue, bad complexion, feeling full, bloated. But also a massive 11 years older.

I was much sicker with DS than DD. I was nauseous through to about 19 weeks with him. I don't think there are any hard and fast rules. Each pregnancy is different.

imy · 16/12/2022 14:49

I looked this up because I was so excited to know the gender, and there's no evidence that symptoms differ with gender at all. I am pregnant with a girl and felt very sick in my first trimester but never actually was sick, and feel a lot better now (I'm 20 weeks Monday). I understand wanting to know so desperately! But not sure there's really anything to go on. I got a private scan at 16 weeks so that I could find out a bit sooner :)

2020firsttimemum · 16/12/2022 21:14

My two pregnancies have differed massively but I don't think there's any reason for it

DS (2) nausea but no sickness until about 14 weeks. No real issues but lots of back and rib pain early on. Craving for anything sweet! 44th centile throughout measurements

DD (30 weeks pregnant) sickness from weeks 6-12ish although not horrendous, normally in the morning. A few issues with bleeding, protein blood pressure etc. didnt want anything sweet, completely savoury. Ribs nowhere near as bad this time! 90th centile at the moment!! (Hoping this comes down)

Pheepa · 16/12/2022 21:34

My 2 DD were similar, nauseous constantly but rarely sick in first trimester and fine in 2nd and 3rd. 10 years on I’m 37 weeks with DS and was sick lots from 6 weeks to 24. Heartburn in all 3

Flowersflowers121 · 16/12/2022 21:57

I'm 21 weeks pregnant and had aaaaawful sickness until about 17/18 weeks. Just found out we're having a baby boy :)

Tallulasdancingshoes · 16/12/2022 22:00

I don’t know if there’s any truth in it, but I was terribly sick with dd. It was awful - sick literally everyday from 5 weeks until she was born. With ds my sickness had passed by about week 15.

Cuppasoupmonster · 16/12/2022 22:03

Sickness with DD but full blown HG with this baby (boy) which has only just calmed down at 24 weeks. In both pregnancies I’ve felt rough as a dog in the first trimester, had very slow growing leg hair(?!) and craved citrus fruit type foods. That said my bump is a bit higher this time round.

firsttimelondonmummy · 16/12/2022 22:19

I’ve had very few symptoms and not a hint of sickness and I’m having a boy! (13+3)
Maybe true for some but not for others?

MamaBear1022 · 16/12/2022 22:28

Boy - HG sickness from 6-16+5 days
Slow growing leg hair
Thick hair
Clear skin
Craved salt and vinegar crisps/full fat coke & chocolate (not a sweet eater before)
High bump
Hardly put on any weight

DolphinNosePotato1 · 16/12/2022 22:32

I had 2 boys then a girl. I had very severe sickness with my eldest but it only lasted until 16 weeks. I had bad but not quite as severe sickness with both my middle boy and my girl, both of which lasted the entire pregnancy.

ShowOfHands · 16/12/2022 22:33

Welly, yes, quite. They're old wives tales so will coincidentally ring true for some and not others.

There's no difference between boy and girl pregnancies in the way you're hoping op. Short of a scan, you won't know the baby's sex and even they're not a guarantee.

firsttimelondonmummy · 16/12/2022 22:36

OP if your desperate to know have an NIPT done.
It’s the most accurate way and also gives you the most accurate non invasive results for trisomy’s.
I felt mine was worth every penny.

mishmased · 16/12/2022 22:44

I had two boys 2.5 years apart. No morning sickness, nausea nothing! Just growing a bump and that was it.
Eight years later got pregnant, really bad nausea entire pregnancy. I was also exhausted and I can count the number of foods that I could eat. I was on medication as the nausea was so bad until baby was born and a girl.
But there's a huge difference between having a baby at ages 26 and 34 😃

Mine was wrong! This was only last month!

Waitingfordecember · 16/12/2022 23:16

I have two boys and had massively different pregnancies with each of them. With DS1 I was sick constantly for months and felt exhausted, hormonal, and had awful back pain.

With DS2 I was tired early on but felt mostly fine for the rest of my pregnancy 🤷‍♀️.

firsttimelondonmummy · 16/12/2022 23:21

@Cuppasoupmonster nothing will ever be 100% however it’s very very rare they are wrong.

‘Diagnostic accuracy of NIPT for foetal sex determination is very high. The sensitivity of the test is 98.9% and the specificity 99.6%. The positive and negative predictive values are correspondingly high, 99.6% and 98.8% respectively.

Diagnostic accuracy of NIPT increases with gestational age. While sensitivity before week 7 is 74.5%, it is 94.8% in the gestational weeks 7-12 and 99.0% after week 20.’

Cuppasoupmonster · 16/12/2022 23:34

@firsttimelondonmummy yes, I know all of that. I used Ultrasound Direct which has a 99.3% accuracy for the sex! However it’s a relatively new test and if you look online there are a lot of anecdotal stories about it being wrong. I do wonder if they’ll have to ‘update’ the accuracy statistics in a few years..

firsttimelondonmummy · 16/12/2022 23:40

@Cuppasoupmonster haven’t they been around for over 10 years now?
A lot of the studies I read were from a pretty big data batch and so I’d be surprised if significantly off.
I’ve read anecdotal stories about some NIPT being more accurate than others e.g. Harmony but only seen a handful of people staying they or someone they knew had a gender misdiagnosis.
Was yours girl then you had a boy?
I hear that’s more likely than the other way round?

PinkButtercups · 16/12/2022 23:44

Well I've had B/G/B.

All my symptoms in both pregnancies have been the same.

DS I had pretty much none except heartburn.

With DD & DS (twins) again the same but heartburn was worse. Put that down to having two in there.

ProcrastinatingUntilNextYear · 16/12/2022 23:51

Girl - my symptoms were worse. Hungry all the time, sore back, morning sickness, dizziness, my bump was smaller.

Boy - craved sweet things, had just nausea but no vomiting, my boobs increased in size considerably, bump was huge and I put on weight all over.

Spirini · 17/12/2022 00:16

My dd: dreadful spots and soooo hairy
My ds: the odd spot but less hairy

Thick luscious hair with my DS

InTheFutilityRoomEatingBiscuits · 17/12/2022 00:27

DD pregnancy - no symptoms, no sickness, no bump, only kicks I could feel were any evidence I was ever pregnant with her.
DD pregnancy - no symptoms, no sickness, very small bump, horrific rib flare and SPD which had me on crutches for several months including after birth.
DS pregnancy - some nausea, no sickness, no bump, horrific SPD from day one of pregnancy.
DD pregnancy - lots of nausea, lots of sickness, small bump, horrific SPD from day one of pregnancy.
DS pregnancy - no sickness, SPD from day one.

No rhyme or reason to it IME (by the way I don’t have five children).

Erber · 17/12/2022 16:16

I'm pregnant with my 3rd and the first 2 times I had awful morning sickness the first 2 times. Sick 20+ times a day from the minute I found out until they were born both times. They're both girls.

This time I've been okay, I had some morning sickness and nausea which stopped around week 14 and was only actually sick if I let myself get too hungry, or first thing in the morning when my stomach was empty. I was wondering the same myself as this pregnancy feels so different from the others. Unfortunately this time around I've had awful pgp which started very suddenly at week 15 and left me unable to walk properly or bend for 2 weeks. I'm now 24+4 and although it's getting better very slowly I still find it a huge struggle to do basic things that involve bending over although I can walk pretty much normally now. I'm not convinced it's pgp but that's what the physio are calling it.

We're not finding out the gender so I'll let you know in April.

It’s very accurate for the trisomies but I don’t know how much data they keep on sex accuracy as it’s more a ‘nice to know’ than anything medical. Yes test said female, scan said male, repeat NIPT said male as did amnio 😊

thismeansnothing · 17/12/2022 16:39

With my first I had zero symptoms. Nothing at all early on. No morning sickness, no heartburn. No cravings until the 3/4 weeks when I wanted anything salty, or Ice. Bump was perfectly round like I'd shoved a football up my top.

With my second I had aweful morning sickness for about 4/5 months. No heartburn. Craved sugar. All the time once the sickness settled and my bump was different. Alot smaller and more elongated.

Both were girls.
