Best formula?

Hi all, I'm due in 5 weeks and I'm planning on formula feeding. Trouble is I don't know which formula to go for, what formula did you start out with if you formula fed?

Aptimill and DR B Bottles
Cow and Gate too.
Look at what you can get locally and who does ready made, which can be a godsend in the first few days.
I used Aptimil with my first but when I had my second the midwife gave me a ready made bottle of cow and Gate so I continued with that.
They are all pretty similar so look at price and availability

All formulas are the same! They are so heavily regulated. The only difference is how they advertised it. I work on a post natal ward.

They’re not all the same. Aptamil is really good. Many others are just too rich and cause your baby to be sick a lot.

OhLookCriedNed · 13/12/2022 14:09

The best advice I was given was to start with the cheapest and most readily available (including premade),and hope that the baby takes to it with no issues.
I started with Cow and Gate, but noticed after a few weeks that DS was struggling with a lot of trapped wind, so swapped him to SMA and had no further issues.
Went straight to SMA with DS2 just because it was familiar.

Started with Aptamil. Now use Kendamil

dementedpixie · 13/12/2022 14:11

Aptamil is no better than others despite being more expensive. They all have to have certain levels of nutrients so they are all fine nutritionally. I used aptamil for one of mine but swapped to cow and gate as it was cheaper.

TallulahBetty · 13/12/2022 14:11

They're pretty much all the same, there are very strict minimum regulations as to what they have in them. Try the cheapest then work up, is my suggestion. Everyone seems to hate on SMA these days but my DD was fine on it from the start (and that was when she was mixed-fed with expressed and formula, so it must have been fine for her to not be fussy).

Yes they are pretty much all the same. By law they have all have to meet the same nutritional and safety standards. Therefore I went with the cheapest which was cow and gate and we used the tommee tippee bottles which both done DS really well. I would start out which the cheapest basic ones rather than all the fancy expensive ones and see how you get on.

TallulahBetty · 13/12/2022 14:12

I don't know how 'minimum' snuck in there, sorry

dementedpixie · 13/12/2022 14:12

Oh yeah, I used SMA with my first child and aptamil and cow and gate for my 2nd.

RoseslnTheHospital · 13/12/2022 14:12

They all have to have the same prescribed levels of certain ingredients, if any new ingredient is found to be beneficial then the manufacturers will be required to add it in future. All non-specialist first infant formulas have the same nutritional values, the differences are minimal. So, go with what is the best value and most easily available for you where you live. You might want to consider trying the small bottles of ready made formula that many brands supply, which are ready to use and can be kept at room temperature until opened. They are convenient but expensive.

pinkpotatoez · 13/12/2022 14:44

Thanks all, think going with most available around me to start with is the best shout. Will go with SMA

We will be purchasing Mamia from Aldi! I've heard it's less frothy so less wind, you get a 900g tub instead on 800g, and the scooper is smaller, but with the same number per Oz type thing, so it's much more economical, PLUS it's cheaper than all the others too!

With my first DC I bought aptamil, watched the Chanel 4 programme on it and quickly went out and bought cow and Gate because it was so much cheaper - this time I'm going even cheaper 👍

SleekMamma · 13/12/2022 16:12

The nutrition ingredients are all the same as they have to be. Buy the cheapest that agrees with your baby
