Hi all

So I'm 5.4 weeks pregnant when for a early scan due to spotting and pain scan showed I was actually 6.2 weeks with an empty sac. I was shocked as I was tracking ovulation so in confused as to how I'm showing at 6.2. I've had previous losses so I'm aware of what nurse was saying that it's not looking good and to come back in 11 days which will be this following Monday. I checked my nhs app and this letter appeared, could someone please explain what it actually means as I don't have a clue!! All I was told was it looks like a blighted ovum. Thank you

Hello, I'm sorry I don't know the answer but I didn't want to read and run. I had a blighted ovum in July, i know that when they are measuring up to 10 weeks the allow to be a week out either side because they are literally talking millimetres and it's so hard to get an exact measurement! I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you that things have moved on at your next scan, the wait is horrible. I tried to hope for the best and prepare for the worst but I know how impossible that is xxx

@natkh which part of the letter don't you understand? It's all just the findings of the scan in short points.

They can't diagnose any type of miscarriage on one scan so they need to repeat it. For a sac size 6+2 you should see fetal pole and yolk, which they didn't. However they need to scan again to be sure. The sonographer you saw was giving you the most likely outcome of an anembryonic pregnancy but since you've only been scanned once, that won't be on the official note.

Thank you so it's 50/50 as of now. I thought it was a definite loss

It's not a definite loss, however by 5+2 you should see a yolk sac. So it's currently indicating that this pregnancy likely won't progress, but they won't know for sure until the next scan. So sorry if that sounds blunt but I think it's best to be informed @natkh . Crossing my fingers that everything shows on next scan and it's good news, and I'm very sorry if it's bad news.

Thank you so much i prefer honest opinion x I've had the worst symptoms ever the sickness is something else. With my last miscarriage I only had tender breast but they say every Pregnacy is different x im just praying everything turns out okay ❤️ it would be torture to have these strong symptoms and have no baby developing

Unfortunately in either missed miscarriage or anembryonic pregnancy (referred to as blighted ovum but that term is out of date) the HCG and progesterone rises as normal, which is what causes your symptoms. Nature is cruel that way that symptoms don't mean all is well. But as I said I'm hoping for you @natkh it is! Lots of people have seen not much at 5 wk then plenty a couple of weeks later x

Thank you @IWillBeWaxingAnOwl would I start to bleed now or could it take longer?

@natkh honestly hard to say! IF anembryonic (and it's still an if right now), sometimes your body will notice it's not viable and start the process of a miscarriage (progesterone drops, triggering bleeding). Sometimes your body will miss it and will keep on merrily producing progesterone and HCG to sustain pregnancy.

If it's not developing in 2 weeks time they will offer you options (usually either waiting it out or medication to induce miscarriage).
