Nub theory, have the clinic let it out of the bag?

Hi I'm just over 12 weeks and on my scan today there was a blue letter 'm' which I think means male. I don't understand nub theory but from this pic do you think I'm having a boy?

Looks like a girl to me based on the nub

Firen · 06/12/2022 14:59

Yes I think boy. Congratulations!!!

Nah, I doubt the NHS even bother to look for the sex of baby unless you want them to find out.
I've used a private clinic in the past for a gender scan and they don't even see women before 16weeks as ultrasound is too unreliable to confirm sex before this gestation

Thank you, this wasn't an NHS scan it was a private scan. Okay 1 all at the moment... I have looked up nub theory and thought girl but the big blue 'm' makes me think boy now.

Are you sure that doesn't mean "median" or something? I'd presume, looking at that photo, that it was linked to the measuring points and the dotted line.

Congratulations, whatever sex of baby you end up having.

LittleLottle · 06/12/2022 15:35

Id say thats a girl nub with time to rise into a boy. Maybe the M was for measurement, as it looks like theyre measuring CRL there. Or perhaps they just hit a random button on their keyboard by accident?

Gilm0reGirl · 06/12/2022 16:00

I’d discount the M symbol, I clinic will predict sex based on nub theory, they’d get it wrong so often as nub theory can be so hit and miss. Even at sexing scans done privately they write “boy” or “girl” on the scan once they can get what they believe is an accurate guess. Call them and ask what it means if you’re wondering though.

WaltzingWaters · 06/12/2022 16:05

I thought that on a private scan I got, it said M, but when I looked it all up it was nothing to do with the sex of baby (can’t remember what it actually was, some completely different measurement). Although baby did end up being a boy!

Unless you've done NIPT, they don't know the sex of your baby yet. The genitalia can't be seen on ultrasound until you are 15 weeks +.

Yourteaisgettingcold · 06/12/2022 20:26

If you're only 12 weeks it's too early to tell the sex of the baby. Nub theory is just a theory and not scientific fact.

Katie2021 · 07/12/2022 22:13

aww i don’t know why but I think girl too hahaha!

i find the nub theory hard to work out 😂😂 I had my scan today the picture is quite clear but I can’t see a nub hahaa, if anyone would care to guess would love to see what you think girl or boy ☺️

it was my 12 week scan today but turns out I’m actually 14 weeks! X

If you want to find out you can do a blood test that looks at abnormalities and also gender.

bibbiddybobbidyboo · 07/12/2022 22:23

At 12 weeks they can't "formally" identify the sex, they could take an estimated guess but there is no way they would write it on your scan.

They have all different type of writing on the scans which are mostly initials for medical jargon and dimensions.

The sonographer told me she could have a strong guess at the sex at my 12 week private scan. I didn't want to find out the sex though and when I looked at the nub I knew myself what the sex was likely to be and was correct when baby was born.
