High risk pregnancy anxiety

I am currently 21 weeks with my second child. My first pregnancy was IVF after years of trying and I had a lot of anxiety throughout. This pregnancy was a surprise and has been so much more relaxed. Once I got over the initial shock, it’s felt so easy this time. I trust my body more and time is going so much quicker.

However, I looked at my notes following my 20 week scan last week and I have noticed that my pregnancy has been classed as high risk. It has put me into such a spin. I have an appointment with my gynaecologist next week anyway so I will discuss it then, but I assume it is either my age (39) or that I had a retained placenta with my first birth. The sonographer said everything looked good at the scan.

I am not entirely sure what I am looking for, I guess just some reassurance from anyone who has been in the same boat?

It’s probably because you had a retained placenta last time, they’ll want to monitor you and take any precautions if needed.

High risk could mean a lot of things. It could just be age or weight or previous delivery method. If there was a major problem I'm sure they would have told you.

Having a high risk pregnancy is rubbish though. I'm high risk this time because of previous emergency c section and also a short cervix and increased risk of preterm labour which is being managed. At first I was so anxious about it all but a few weeks on (I'm 24 weeks now) after getting over the initial panic, it seems much more manageable.

Hopefully you'll feel more reassured after talking to your Dr about it. It might just mean you get more monitoring which is usually a good thing.

I'm high risk because my previous babies where small, both born healthy, high risk doesn't really many anything loads of things can make you high risk but doesn't mean anything will go wrong, just you will need more monitoring which isnt a bad thing 🙂 if there was anything to worry about they would have told you, good luck 🍀
