I went to epu today for an early scan as I've had recurrent miscarriages.

The scan started well, they could see the baby and a heartbeat and my dates are exactly right at 6weeks +1.

She then found a pocket or sac I cannot remember what she called it of blood. She said it was small but it could be nothing for It could be a bad sign especially with my previous losses.

Has anyone experienced this? How did it end? Should I be preparing for the worst?

Theyve booked me in for another scan in a weeks time.

Thank you for taking the time to reply. This is a much wanted pregnancy and I've been through a lot it get here x

Probably a subchorionic haematoma? Fairly common in early pregnancy and a common cause of unexplained bleeding. Research varies a lot about whether they are associated with increased risk of miscarriage or not. Some say yes, some say no.

I had a SCH at 6wks that caused sporadic bleeding from 6w to 10w and really had me counting myself out. But currently 18w, and everything looked good at the 12w scan; no SCH. I also had two MCs before this pregnancy. So if that's what it is, don't count yourself out. Just take each day as it comes. 💙

PS: they sometimes don't cause bleeding, fyi, and are just picked up on an early scan.

I had a subchorionic hematoma which was picked up at 7 weeks (after some early bleeding). It had resolved itself for me by 12 weeks and now I’m 25 weeks all going ok so far. They can be a risk to the baby if they are very large and close to the pregnancy but the many resolve themselves (either by dislodging and causing bleeding which can be a lot of blood so prepare yourself, or by reabsorbing back into your body).

I know how triggering bleeding can be in pregnancy after loss. Be kind to yourself, and try to focus on other things in the meantime (almost impossible to do, first trimester is so difficult and feels so long after a miscarriage). The fact you are measuring spot on and have seen the heartbeat is a really positive sign. If you do have bleeding contact your EPU again and ask them to put you on progesterone (a study showed progesterone in pregnancies after miscarriage where there was bleeding lowered the risk of subsequent miscarriage).

All the best, I hope everything goes well for this baby and you get your rainbow x

I also had a haematoma OP (3cm) which caused spotting from week 10-16.

If I remember correctly I was told they can be an issue if they are very large but mine was considered fairly small and didn’t cause any issues apart from the stress of bleeding! By my 20 week scan it has resolved itself.

I totally understand your anxiety given your history (I also have experienced MC) but what you’ve been diagnosed with is fairly common and does not mean things will go wrong.

I wish you all the very best with this pregnancy xx

I have also been in the same position as you with previous mcs. I went in for an early scan at around 8 weeks and they found a small hematoma and told me the same, that it could be fine or it could be a bad sign. Went back after two weeks and it had shrunk significantly and they weren’t worried about it anymore. By 12 weeks it had disappeared completely. I hope it’s the same for you!

I had this. Big bleed at 6 weeks and thought I'd lost baby. Went to EPU and everything was fine. Bled on and off for a few weeks and by my 20 week scan the pocket of blood had absorbed. Its pretty common apparently x

Susieblue18 · 02/12/2022 23:03

I had this at an early scan which I had due to previous miscarriage. They said it would probably just be reabsorbed and it was and I went on to have a normal pregnancy. Good luck.

I had this. DS was an IVF baby and at 5 weeks +5 days I had the biggest bleeds and clotting I'd ever had. It just suddenly gushed. I thought it was over but DS was there, heartbeat and all.

I was on bed rest from then on till 12 weeks. I was told to take it easy and let the body absorb the bleed. I had no further bleeding.
