6 weeks pregnant two sacks, only 1 fetus

Hello, I was hoping for some advice.

I went for a scan this morning and the doctor saw one sack with a fetus and another sack without anything.

The doctor mentioned that it could be twins but we are to just see how things develop.

I was just wondering if at this stage it is normal for twins to develop a different rates.

Thank you for reading, and any advice is welcome ☺️

@paddoxhill was the fetus measuring correctly for 6 wks? It sounds like one of the two is unlikely to be viable (the one without fetus) but the doctor is being cautious of saying that as everything is so tiny at this stage. Unfortunately it's common for pregnancies to start off as multiples but one embryo then not to last

I had this at early pregnancy and one baby. They think she absorbed her microscopic twin very very early on. Dunno how that works when they're in two separate sacks but that's what they told me. 🤷🏻‍♀️

Hi thank you for your replies.

What I am confused about is that a week before there was nothing to see. One week later two sacs and one with a fetal pole.

Part of me thinks that it is possible it could be twins and one is developing slower. Twins do run in my family. I do also believe that maybe it’s a bit of wishful thinking on my part? As it sounds more like vanishing twin syndrome

@paddoxhill the problem is that any gestational sac and fetus running significantly behind is unlikely to be viable and to last. So a twin just a few days behind the other might be fine and just due to shared resources but running weeks behind suggests it will vanish. I'm sorry x

Are they offering another follow up scan to see how development goes?

It's horrific, but I was relieved to see one baby at the next scan (a few weeks after the one where they saw two sacks). I have an older disabled DC and looking after twins and him would've been a massive car crash. It was pretty rough with just one but at least I could strap her to me and crack on.
