Drinks and ice cream from machines

Hi all,

I've recently got my BFP!! So now I'm thinking of the best ways to keep us both healthy. I read somewhere not to have soft serve ice cream due to the machines used and chance of harmful bacteria. Does anyone know if this is the same for hot drinks?

We're heading to a couple of Christmas markets and love a hot drink and food from the stalls!

Thankyou :)

Hot drinks will be fine as heat kills bacteria.

P.s. NHS doesn't warn against soft serve ice cream and places like McDonalds have machines that have cleaning cycles run on them regularly to prevent contamination

I had my son 2 years ago and was told not to eat any soft serve ice cream such as mr whippy, McDonald's machine ice cream or milkshakes for the reasons you stated- it's a listeria risk.

Hot drinks and whipped cream are fine.

That may be advice from your particular midwife but the nhs itself says they are fine to eat

I have read something about soft ice cream but I’m not sure that’s traditional Christmas market food anyway. I live in a European city with a Christmas market and I’m pregnant. We’ve been 3 times already this year for our dinner and some Glühwein (non alcoholic for me!). We did the same when I was pregnant with our first. I guess the only questionable food is fondue as traditionally it is made with wine but it’s a personal choice as it’s a minimal amount, I’m not a huge fan anyway so I don’t bother. Everything else here is cooked thoroughly and piping hot so I can’t say bacteria is a concern. Go and enjoy yourself!
