Hi everyone I am 28 weeks and 1 day pregnant one day pregnant I have gestational diabetes and I have my first appointment with the obstetrician and I'm wondering if anyone can help me with what to expect they did say a scan so I'm guessing growth scan? and I'm also slightly worried as my midwife has already told me that he can be a bit busk I think she said so now I'm worrying even more. Can anyone help?

Hello fellow gestational mumma!

I found I had it at 25 weeks from a routine check as my mum also had it. So basically you have a growth scan, an appointment with a diabetic nurse and a midwife.

Growth scan for babies health which will determine babies educated guess size, the fluid around baby and any changes. Your fluctuating insulin can often hormonally affect your babies size so they like to be careful.

You’ll meet a diabetic nurse who gives you a testing kit, book to record your readings to check your blood sugar and they will talk to you about managing your diet and food / drink. It is more informative and they will let you know the sorts of high sugar or carbs to avoid. I found the diabetic website recipes brilliant and you figure out what you can and can’t eat to keep your levels good. They will then re book your appointments after this to keep your readings seen and you have to let them know if you exceed your readings as this rise in insulin can affect baby.

You will a midwife for routine blood test, wee check etc as normal.

hope this helps! My son is 14 months and this seemed so stressful whilst pregnant but you will get there and just be patient with yourself.

Me that he can be a bit "busk" and said not to worry I think she said and I have no idea what that means think I'm overthinking also.

Did she mean brisk? Like he is very matter of fact? She was probably just warning so you don’t think his manner is in relation to you.

For what it’s worth my diabetes obstetrics consultants have all been lovely and supportive. Though to be fair, one could be described as a bit ‘brisk’.

My meetings with the diabetes consultant were all very brief. They may discuss birth options based on the results of the scan such as an early induction if baby is large. In my case I preferred c-section over induction and the consultant just booked me in. It was reviewed at each appointment but basically nothing changed.

The scans are just to check baby’s growth - if the diabetes is not well controlled growth might be high or alternatively if there are problems with the placenta growth could be low. I appreciated the scans for reassurance that everything was OK.

Check out the UKGD website if you haven’t already - loads of good info on there.
