Subchorionic Heamtaoma and empty sac Four Weeks Pregnant

So I thought I was about 8 weeks pregnant going off of my last period, and I called the hospital after I started randomly cramping in my lower left back and noticed I was bleeding (Not a lot of blood and it was brown not bright red- this is my first pregnancy so I definitely panicked)

I was booked in for an emergency ultra-sound the next day, and told that because of my long cycle i had miscalculated and was more like four weeks pregnant. The doc said they could see a very tiny empty sac (I don’t know if it was the yolk sac or gestational sac maybe someone could explain the difference to me?) and that it was surrounded by bleed.

they’ve booked me in for another scan in two weeks, but I’m still bleeding and now just really confused. Is it normal that the sac is empty or does that mean my baby is not growing? Very hard thinking I was 8 weeks just to learn there’s nothing in there and might not ever be. Also not sure what the bleeding has to do with this, it’s called a Subchorionic Haematoma and I’m worried that going to mean I have a miscarriage.

Any advice greatly appreciated!

Depends when you tested positive. If you tested positive 6 weeks ago then you are 8 weeks pregnant and this is likely anembryonic and therefore on its way to a miscarriage.

If you tested positive only 2 weeks ago then the sac size is fine, you would not see any embryo at this stage even if all fine. The bleeding could end in miscarriage or could be fine.

Can you tell us more about when you tested positive and how strong the lines were?

Hi thank you for your reply! I tested positive on the 1st November so aboht four weeks ago and the lines were quite strong I think - it seems a bit crazy that I would have tested and got a positive immediately after conceiving tho but maybe there’s a chance that that happened? doc’s said because of my long (crazy) cycle it would make sense that I was about 4-5 weeks

Unfortunately @Km31 , a strong positive 4 weeks ago suggests you conceived at least 12 days prior to that positive. That would mean currently your pregnancy is measuring behind, which CAN be fine but sadly is often predictive of miscarriage.

I assume they are offering you a follow up scan? I wish you all the best and hope things do work out x

Sorry I can see you do have a follow up scan. I hope that at that scan you see a 6 week embryo and I'm really sorry if that's not the case x

Thank you @IWillBeWaxingAnOwl I have a feeling that you’re right. The midwife did say that it would make sense because of my very long cycle, but I think she was probably just trying not to worry me. I also have been pretty consistently bleeding brown and red so I’m sure that it’s probably a miscarriage, the worst thing really is having to wait two whole weeks to be sure. Thank you for your messages though I appreciate you taking the time to reply and send good vibes xxx

Some women bleed loads and still have a healthy birth. For others the bleeding ia a sign of miscarriage. I know it's hard but all you can do is take care of yourself and try to take your mind off it. Worrying won't improve the outcome, for all we'd like it to!
