Dilated left kidney at 20 and 21 week scans

Hi all. Just looking for some positive stories and reassurance... Dilated renal pelvis was picked up at my 20 week scan and just back from a follow up scan with a fetal medicine consultant today. It was reassuring as nothing else wrong with baby that he could see, and the kidney is only slightly dilated at 7mm. He thinks it is a reflux issue with urine traveling back up the ureter rather than a blockage .. hoping it resolves itself! Have a 32 week scan to check on it.

I've read quite a few threads about babies needing to be on antibiotics for months/ years if they have this issue and it's stressing me out a bit! Does anyone have any positive stories about the kidney resolving itself before birth (I know this can happen) or shortly after birth? If it didn't resolve itself how soon will they do the test to see if it's a reflux issue? Would baby need to be on antibiotics until this test?

I dunno that condition. DC1 had another kidney condition, pyeostatis?, picked up on ultrasound. It's a soft marker for chromosome problems.

I was very stressed & had lots of extra scans. What a load of worry for nothing. DS was fine. He's 90 kg of man now, actually. I can't take ultrasound seriously now, although I guess my instincts are to avoid ultrasounds & don't look hard unless you have to.

One day at a time, is my best advice.

My little one had this but it was missed at the scan and he subsequently was blue lighted to hospital at 5 weeks. One of the scariest experiences of my life. We had antibiotics for around 2 years and everything resolved itself naturally. We had a few ultrasound scan check ups and another scan (forgot it’s name) to look at his kidneys in more detail. At least they’ve seen it on your scan and you are prepared x

Similar to @bubble55 but I was the baby. It sounds fairly traumatic for my parents but I am right as rain now! Due with my first baby in a few weeks and my antenatal team have been really on the ball checking my scans in case there is a similar problem, so that’s something to bear in mind for your baby - I didn’t know it could be an issue (I realise that’s years away!). My consultant said it is actually a fairly common thing. The important thing is that they have picked it up, and will be monitoring it. I know that’s easier to say than do though - a day feels like a lifetime when waiting for an ultrasound.

Thanks @lljkk did he need to have antibiotics at birth or was it resolved before then?

@bubble55 gosh that sounds scary! Glad he is all ok now 🙂

antibiotics weren't discussed, so I guess a fairly different condition.

Whatever it is, you'll cope OP.

One of my twins had two dilated kidneys on the 16 weeks scans and antibiotics after birth were discussed.
I'm now 18 weeks and 4 scans later (my twins have complications) and it's actually never been mentioned again and is not on any of the other scan reports.
I will check with them about it next week, but it looks like it resolved itself!

Hi OP. I have had this exact situation today, and I am having a follow up scan tomorrow. Just wondering what the outcome was for you in the end ❤️
