GD Scare and I feel miserable

Hi all..
Background to this thread - I had reduced fetal movements on 26+5 and had been in hospital to get checked. Fortunately everything was ok and it was only that my lil girl was having a lazy day.. but it was the third time I went in for RFM, so the midwife was concerned - booked in for a scan and fixed up an emergency antenatal appointment with the consultant (high risk pregnancy).

Yesterday, at 27+4 , had a scan which said my baby is weighing 2lb 6oz (1180g) and at 90th centile. After the scan, went in for the clinic where they found 3+ level glucose in urine 🥺

Yesterday noon I had potato curry and rice, which I realized was too rich in carbs.

Due to urine sugar, the doc booked me in for a GTT , but the only available slot is 10 days away😵

I am so beaten up thinking I am going to end up having GD but the diagnosis is delayed by 10 days and potentially the treatment by few more days after..

Has anyone had urine sugar but tested negative for GD ? what did your baby's weight looked like ?!

Please help this miserable mama 🙏 have been alone at home since morning as husband has a very stressful job, trying to console myself but failing badly. This is a rainbow pregnancy and can't bear the thought that something is harming my precious baby 😭 thank you for reading a long post x

Yep I've had it twice in both of my pregnancies. GTT came back clear. With DS I was always measuring 2 weeks ahead, he was 7lb 7oz when born at 38+2 though which I think was 50th centile.

I was tested 3 or 4 times during this pregnancy. Always negative, always with a massive baby (99th percentile).

All the way through I’ve had the “whether or not I stress about this won’t change it” mentality which has helped me not stress about it.

Same, was watched very closely as they suspected it, due mainly to enormous water retention and enormous baby.
All good and weight fell off once said enormous baby made his exit

I was tested 3 times in pregnancy #2, all negative and once in pregnancy #3, also negative. However, I had obvious symptoms - large baby and excess amniotic fluid. I started a low carb/ sugar diet anyway and joined the GD UK facebook group. My 3 rainbows (DTs and ds) are all fine. Can you start a GD friendly diet now just in case?

GD really isnt something to be overly upset by. If you have it you have it, you can't control that, it's all the fault of your placenta buggering up your pancreas temporarily.

If you do have GD then you'll test your sugar levels a few times a day, you'll be a bit more careful with your diet and you might need to take some medicine either orally or in a shot which has a teeny thin little needle and is very easy and painless to administer.

You'll get more scans, if baby is big or if the scans show any problems then you might be induced early but not necessarily.

I was because DD was a chunk, 8lb 11oz at 37.5 weeks, induction was straight forward, lots of waiting around but otherwise uneventful and I had a relatively quick Labour with gas n air. DD had her sugar levels tested a couple of times before we were allowed to leave, results were perfect both times.

In terms of diet, you reduce simple, high sugar carbs, keep eating all food groups and make choices like increasing protein and fat, making sure that you always have protein with your carb (apple slices with peanut butter, egg with bread) and swap out white potatoes for sweet potato.

I know it's disappointing and you will be concerned for your baby but honestly, GD is very manageable and does not have to ruin your pregnancy.

@LeafHunter that's a good attitude actually.. because I am completely aware that stressing about things will only harm the baby.. trying to be strong for myself and the baby but feeling too lonely at this point of time.. this pregnancy has been such a roller coaster ride..

Yesterday my consultant also noted that it could be simple genetics - my husband is 6'1 and very muscular, kind of amateur weight lifter types.. most of the people in his family are largely built ! Where as I am 5'2 and had BMI less than 20 before conception.. and everyone in my family is quite petite too... Hope the baby is just big, without anything serious going on 🥺

@HickoryStump @Eek3under3 bumps and babies come in so many sizes and shapes don't they?! During the scan, I was told that the amniotic fluid is normal in quantity; just that the baby is a bit bigger..

Just as a precaution, I did some research and replaced white rice and bread with brown ones. And including veggies and eggs.. I have been quite active physically since beginning, so will continue that.. rest is out of my control, at least before I get to know what is actually happening..

OP I'm so sorry to hear how anxious you are.
I gave birth to my rainbow and was diagnosed with GD at 32 weeks. I was so worried and also beat myself about it.
With hindsight, I really didn't need to worry. My AMAZING gd consultant told me that risks associated with GD are present when it goes undiagnosed.
It sounds like a long wait until you can get the glucose test, so you could always try and follow a GD diet until then I guess?
I'm sure everyone is told differently, but I was given this advice around carb intake:
Up to 15g carbs with breakfast
Up to 40g carbs with dinner and tea
Up to 10g carbs with snacks
Then try fast around 10 hours at night and try and do as much walking as possible (easier said than done when growing a little human).

Good luck OP. You have not done anything wrong.
