Tips - food to handle sickness/nausea

Hi all,

Not really sure what advice I'm looking for here as I don't know what I want myself, but hoping for some ideas that might work!

I'm 5+2 and have had nausea really kick in this week. Today I woke up nauseous, tried to nibble a ginger biscuit straight away but just couldn't face it, then was sick. I managed some cereal but then the nausea came back. Sucking mints worked only while I was eating them, then ten minutes later I was heaving and retching. All food or the idea of preparing food at home is totally unappetising - the smell of the oven or the thought of preparing ingredients. So I've walked to a local cafe and had, bizarrely, a sausage roll and an orange juice and I feel loads better.

I know it's worse when my stomach is empty but no foods are appealing. I'm doing my online shop tomorrow - what clever things can I order to keep nibbling on to keep it at bay? I thought I'd get clear cravings but all my body is saying is 'feed me but not any of that stuff'...

I found I could manage crusty baguette dipped in balsamic vinegar.
And for a time, pot noodles or microwave lasagne!!!!
Hardly the best food for the poor baby but it was just while I was so sick.
Good luck, I hope it doesn't last too long into the pregnancy for you.

Writerscompanion · 25/11/2022 14:30

Thanks - I actually might try super noodles for the first time since I was a teenager...

@Writerscompanion congratulations on your pregnancy!

Try to avoid getting hungry because that makes it worse, even if you don't feel like eating. Eat what your body will allow you to eat. It might not be the healthiest choices for a while!

It's so difficult. With my daughter I had nausea and sickness until 16 weeks and in this pregnancy until 20 weeks!

Writerscompanion · 25/11/2022 14:39

Thank you! That sounds rough...

Anything you could reliably eat that you'd recommend trying?

@Writerscompanion I'd like to say yes... I've had 3 pregnancies and nothing helped me I'm really sorry to say!!! Doesn't mean you won't find something to help you though.

hulahoopqueen · 25/11/2022 14:44

Congratulations! And I am sorry to hear you're feeling so poorly, it truly is the fucking pits.
I found anything bland or slightly salty worked wonders.
White bread with cream cheese and a sprinkling of salt, any ready salted or salt&vinegar crisps, bananas, tinned fruit, ice lollies, ginger cake, pasta.
Also, do speak to your GP and see if there is anything they can prescribe - there's no need to suffer through if there's something that can help!

Sorry to hear that! But well done you on getting through it!

Some of this sounds promising, thank you! Will try some out in my shop this week.

Feel loads better than I did an hour ago. I can't really complain as this is my first week of it, and hoping it will settle down. I'm just trying to get my head around not knowing what to eat - normally I have the opposite problem!

Salt & Vinegar crisps really helped me!

WeWereInParis · 25/11/2022 15:40

Salt and vinegar crisps helped me as well. And granny smith apples. Other than that, I just ate whatever I felt like at the time. I had a week where all I ate was chicken fried rice but then quite suddenly I went off it and all I wanted was cheesy jacket potatoes.

I also got anti sickness medication from the GP.

Writerscompanion · 25/11/2022 16:35

Cucumber with salt seems to be doing the trick just now. Partner bringing S&V crisps home!

Congratulations! I am nearly 14 weeks and sharp green apples got me through from week 6-12.

I think it is the sourness. X

Frenchfancy · 25/11/2022 16:42

Canada dry worked for me.

sofarequired · 25/11/2022 16:44

Ham rolls. Many many ham rolls. More ham rolls than you could ever imagine. I ate them at the first inkling of nausea, as long as there was food inside me, I seemed to feel ok. Next bit of nausea, more ham rolls!

Yes! Apples for me too! The only fruit I could face eating in the first trimester.

Also plain white bread with butter. Sometimes a cheese and tomato sandwich.

Wrongsideofpennines · 25/11/2022 17:02

Congratulations!

Salt and vinegar crisps have helped in all 3 of my pregnancies.

Currently craving orange juice and satsumas. And the smell of them helps a bit too. Super sour sweets helped in my first pregnancy too but I can't stomach them this time.

Arrowroot biscuits are supposed to be good too. But they are a rare find these days.

Porridgeislife · 25/11/2022 17:05

Five Guys burgers were the only thing I could eat on my really bad days. Somehow it was the right ratio of fat and carbs.

Fox’s Glacier Fruits also worked well when I felt vile. Weetabix was the only thing I could eat for breakfast.

I haven’t had a Five Guys since as it makes me feel a bit nauseous!

As in soft bread roll with ham in? Just checking!

I suffered from HG and it was the worst. The only thing i could manage were ice lollies.

Writerscompanion · 25/11/2022 18:14

Thanks - some good tips here to add to the basket and try!

Re the ham rolls, yes, just a soft white bap with butter and sliced ham! Old school Smile

Luk · 09/12/2022 11:14

Ritz crackers and Tuc crackers for me, plain but salty.

I also wore anti-sickness bands on each wrist, I'm not sure if it's the placebo effect or whether they genuinely work but either way I felt better wearing them, and worse when I took them off! I wore them all day every day in the first trimester. You can buy them for a couple of £ on Amazon.

lostinthejungle22 · 09/12/2022 11:53

For many weeks I survived on un-toasted white bread with butter and sliced cucumbers, sometimes with a bit of avocado, was really refreshing. Also tinned peaches. Plain oatmeal. Then there was a phase of sourdough with hummus and tomatoes on top, I ate that for lunch and dinner for weeks, until one day it made me sick and I didn't eat it anymore. Best way for me to find foods that work was to go to the store and slowly browse every aisle and see what appeals.
