having the IUD/IUS on the same day soon after the baby is delivered????

I am 34 weeks now, and my doctor talked to me about contraception. She suggests IUD/IUS is a very good contraception method. >99%, and can last for 5 years. sound very good. Moreover, it can be done on the same day when I deliver the baby.

The benefit of doing this on the same day is the cervix is already open, and won't be in pain anymore.and also I think it is good to do it at a hospital rather than in a GP or Sexual Clinic.

if anyone has experience having the IUD/IUS on the same day labour?

or other IUD/IUS experience?

thanks!

Oh God no. Why do that to yourself?! It's not as if you'll be having sex that night will you?!

It will still be relatively easy to insert a coil within a few months of giving birth. I had one inserted when DC2 was a few months old and it was fine.

Why don't you want to go to a sexual health clinic? That's the best place to go as they have so much experience of doing it. The clinic I went to was great and they even did an ultrasound to make sure it was in the right place.

I tried to have a IUD fitted about 8 weeks after birth but my GP refused to do it saying that as I was breastfeeding there was a higher chance of uterine perforation in the first 12 weeks after birth. It went in just fine at 12 weeks postpartum. I bought a 20 pack of condoms before the birth in case we got carried away but unsurprisingly we didn’t use any of them. Too tired!

Photosymphysis · 24/11/2022 22:29

I was told I had to wait 3 or 6 months or something (I think it was 6) because of the risk of perforation so soon after birth. It may have been related to breastfeeding.

How quickly does the cervix close? Would it even close quickly enough for an IUD?

Bergmum · 24/11/2022 22:30

I had mine fitted during my c section. The only downside was that the strings moved up so removal was a bit difficult.

Lottieskeeper · 24/11/2022 22:32

I had mine fitted just after my DS was delivered by c section.
I think it was a brilliant idea for 2 reasons
1 I was completely numb from the waist down so didn't feel a thing ( much better than the one I had fitted by the GP which was very painful)
2 I can remember exactly when it was fitted so I know I need it replacing around DS's 5th birthday.

@NameChange30
cause the sexual health clinic nearby has terribly low reviews and seems not so good. I have never been there tho.
But you have a good point, they should have a lot of experience of doing it. and your one sounds very good.

I am not planning to have sex for 6 weeks at least. lol
I am only concerned that putting in a coil will be quite painful.

@Lottieskeeper haha, the reason 2 is funny. I mean is a good idea.

@thecapitalsunited
hm...my doctor has not mentioned the chance of uterine perforation. I would like to breastfeed....

@Photosymphysis
so weird there is a different saying.
wait 3 or 6 months vs the same day is really the opposite direction.
the midwife said the cervix won't close so quickly.

if doing it on the same day wasn't that safe, why would the hospital offer this option?
in fact, I am also concerned the uterus is too big to fit in the coil.
isn't the coil supposed just perfectly fit inside the uterus?

and also, Lochia must be a lot and last for many days, is it not affect the coil keeping in place?

I second the oh god no! I've had three different coils before pregnancy and while they're not fun to have inserted, it's not much more painful than a Pap test. My doctor always had me come in during my period to put it in and your cervix is softer so it's really not too bad. Just take a couple of paracetamols beforehand and you'll be just fine.

Justme10 · 24/11/2022 23:13

I had one fitted during my c section and I wouldn't advise anyone to do it.
Because your womb has to contract to shrink, my coil moved and ended up imbedded in my womb which resulted in continuous womb infections and had to be removed with a hysteroscopy.
Mine could be worst case scenario but I didn't know it would even be a possibility.

happyfishcoco · 25/11/2022 09:35

more I heard, I feel like I am not going to do this.
at least should have to wait the womb become normal

You can continue to contract for days after giving birth. I know I had some whoppers of contractions lasting up to at least a week following my emergency C-section. Doesn't seem like sound conditions for an IUD to settle in.

Justme10 · 26/11/2022 14:45

No it really isn't, I was only warned that I might need the strings trimmed once everything had settled. I had to idea it could cause so many issues.

UpToMyElbowsInDiapers · 26/11/2022 14:50

Absolutely not! I had very straightforward births, but even the midwife coming at me with cotton swabs to clean the grazing, I nearly screamed. That was EXTERNAL. No way would I let anyone come near my cervix right after giving birth. Hard pass.

I got a copper coil fitted a few weeks after baby #2. It didn’t end up working for me (made my periods way too heavy), but the insertion itself was alright.

Mumzyto3 · 18/12/2023 01:46

I am currently going through this had my coil fitted on 05/10 went to have it checked last week no strings nit sure if lost or fallen out now need to wait for an ultrasound 😭 I hope you are OK now x
