Hiya, so just wondering if anyone has had a student midwife caseload them.
I was asked today if I could be the students case load I have said yes because to learn we all have to start somewhere.
From what I understand she will come to my apps and be there for labour aswell.
Is there much more to it? And if anyone had this how did you find it?

I had a student when I gave birth.

I was a bit apprehensive beforehand because I thought the midwife would kind of be “discussing” me with the student and I thought it would be weird.

But it wasn’t like that at all, it was really positive. It was nice to have 2 people taking care of me - it was a nice dynamic actually, more relaxing. And from a practical perspective it was helpful for the midwife to have someone to help her.

Because of my baby’s position I found it really painful to lie on my back. I had to lie down to be examined by the midwife and then she asked if the student could examine me as well. I said no (only because lying down was painful). And they were absolutely fine with it.

I had a student in with us for my daughters birth! She was amazing and loved having two midwives there. Definitely recommend!

I had one for my booking appointment and for birth... 2 different ones.

They were both lovely I didn't mind them at all. Although some things were explained in detail and done twice during booking it was handled very well and not at all embarrassing or awkward.

The one I had at the birth was just shadowing (watching) again not intrusive at all.

Caseload care is the gold standard and sadly a rarity. Being on a student midwife's caseload will mean that you have continuity of care from antenatal appointments to birth and she will always be under the supervision of a qualified midwife. I would absolutely bite their hand off.

I put in my notes I was happy to have a student, DH did a stint on maternity as part of his paramedic degree and so many women were against all the students, not just him as a man but all of them. The only thing I said was no one my husband knew from work as I didn't want that to be awkward in the future😂

I had a student midwife there when I gave birth, it was her second delivery. She was absolutely lovely. I had a episiotomy, vacuum delivery and manual removal of a retained placenta so I she got to tick a few boxes with me. They did chat between themselves, though not excessively and they didn’t over examine me. I’m assuming about how my labour was (or wasn’t progressing) but I live abroad and don’t speak the local language so I was probably a good case from that perspective too!

We also got trainee sonographers at both 12 and 20 week scans so we got to spend twice as long looking at our baby.

Didn't have one thru pregnancy but had student midwife in labour and she was lovely. Had more time and was very attentive and enthusiastic, experienced/qualified midwives had a slightly more pressured vibe, only there for the dramatic bits and quick checks, whereas the student was interested in the whole process.

I had a student at a check up around 28wk and another at 32. The first one was there when I gave birth which was amazing seeing someone I knew with my baby. The other happened to be at my bedside when I was haemorrhaging before emergency surgery. I was so grateful again to see someone I knew at such a scary time

I had a student at most of my routine antenatal appointments and during labour. The students were far more engaging than my actual assigned antenatal midwife, and the student midwife that supported during my labour was wonderful! I also had various students supporting postnatally
as well and I have nothing but praise for them.

I had one on postnatal and she followed my aftercare really closely, she was amazing and I hope she’s doing well a year later.

Thank you so much ladies for sharing your experiences with me, I'm so glad I have said yes to having her learn and do this journey with me. From all I can see it's never bad and everyone's had a positive experience by having a student midwife along with them!

When I had DD I was desperate to get home after a really hellish night in the postnatal ward but there was some hold-up with the paperwork. It was a student midwife who went around goodness knows how many people, getting the necessary signatures before the shift changeover. She was brilliant and I was so grateful to her. I always choose a teaching hospital when given the option.

I had a student midwife last week when I had DD2 and it was great having the support of two in the room.
