Hello, for anyone with NHS antenatal experience, is it normal not to see a midwife for your first appointment until you're almost 10 weeks? Feels forever away! Thank you

Yes that's when I saw mine, was booked in for 12 week scan at that appointment

boogiejive · 22/11/2022 19:42

Yes, very normal. There's nothing to actually do yet. It sucks, but you've just got to wait it out.

Skinnermarink · 22/11/2022 19:43

It is normal I’m afraid, I had mine at about 9.5 weeks along. There’s not really much to be done before that.

Rosalindisafuckingnightmare · 22/11/2022 19:44

Yes this is normal. If you have particular issues before that (sickness that needs medicating or something) then you can see your GP. Congratulations OP.

Unicorn717 · 22/11/2022 19:49

Yes, had my scan booked in after that appointment.

BrewandBiscuit · 22/11/2022 19:51

Very normal. Congratulations

this is helpful!

I live in Northern Ireland- now you don’t see a midwife until after your ‘12 week scan’- which usually takes place at 13/14 weeks

IveDroppedMiBiscuitInMiBrew · 22/11/2022 19:55

Yes the booking appointment is usually around then, I guess part if it is there isn't anything to do before that and also unfortunately many pregnancies end before this point so it'd be a waste of resources to see people before this.

ChristmasJumpers · 22/11/2022 20:29

Yes although it's supposed to be an 8 week booking in appointment, mine was at 10 weeks, they gave me the date of my 12 week scan and 16 week appointment there

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 22/11/2022 20:30

Totally normal and also don't feel disappointed after it if you walk away even not having the pregnancy confirmed - they just assume you are Grin and do all their checks.

ReallyITV · 22/11/2022 20:31

Yes I think mine was between 9-10 weeks. If you are diabetic, or have thyroid issues book in earlier with your GP. Especially with regard to thyroid

I had this exact thought afterwards. What a waste of time if I wasn't actually pregnant! Not that I'd make it up bit still...

IWillBeWaxingAnOwl · 22/11/2022 21:42

Normal. Also hate to tell you but at the appt they also don't really do anything... Ask loads of Q's, take a wee bit of blood and urine, book a scan, the end.

Yourteaisgettingcold · 23/11/2022 00:56

As others have said, it's completely normal and standard as nothing much is needed to be done at that pointment anyway, it's pretty boring tbh but mostly form filling.

flowerexpress · 23/11/2022 10:53

My booking appt isn't till 12 weeks :s it's my first pregnancy so no idea if that's normal/okay. I called the gp surgery, told them how many weeks I was and that was the date the receptionist gave me :/ x
