What is the next step when they are struggling to treat ketones with IV? I was admitted last night with 4+ ketones and after 4 fluid drips and 2 antibiotic drops for infection the ketones are still 4+, any ladies with experience of this?

Sorry you are suffering; they will come down. Ideally you need IV anti sickness and then you need to eat. That's what will being them down. Food will effectively flush them out so they need to focus on getting you to a point where you can eat even just a cracker

I think try and eat something sugary if you can! And plenty of fluids

NP2705 · 23/03/2023 16:12

So sorry to hear you’ve been admitted!

My ketones were always very stubborn at 4+ and I was normally in hospital for 3 days waiting for them to come down. I normally had to wait until the 3rd day to be in a position to eat and then after a full day of eating (I.e. breakfast and lunch) they would eventually drop.

For me it really was the food that made a difference however I mentally had to be feeling better to even attempt to eat after the horror of HG vomiting so it took a while.

I imagine all hospital menus are similar - the pasta bake at my hospital always got my ketones down 😊

Hope you’re able to get home soon!

Ketones are to do with lack of food rather than dehydration. So try to eat as much as you can high sugar, high fat will get them down quicker ☺️ contact Pregnancy Sickness Support they are brilliant and you can get assigned a Peer Supporter to help you for the rest of your pregnancy which can be invaluable. Good Luck

As others have said, food (esp sugary, carby foods) will bring them down. It may take a day or two of fluids and meds before you can face eating.

When I was really bad, they gave me a glucose drip in my first pregnancy. I was in and out of hospital with hyperemisis with both dc.

I also just about managed to melt ice lollies in my mouth (but only lemon or lime ones) to get a bit of sugar into me.

Pregnancy Sickness Support is helpful too

Good luck @boysmumaxx . It's a dreadful thing to go through.

Hi is this board active? I have HG on and off, today I’ve not kept anything down and worried about dehydration. (Dark urine) Never had it before. Being Easter weekend I can’t speak to anyone. I was last able to eat 2 days ago. This is the worst yet. I’m 9 weeks. Any ideas?

Lwrenagain · 09/04/2023 18:10

Hi @spanglesj

Get yourself to your local A&E, you need IV fluids and some iv meds to help you out lovely 💐

Another hg question, I'm 17 weeks and without prednisolone my hg is really kicking off, however the steroids are giving me migraines.
Does anyone have any advice? I'm on ondansetron and cyclizine but without the steroids it's doing sweet FA 😭

Lwrenagain · 09/04/2023 18:10

Just realised this was an old thread

IbizaToTheNorfolkBroads · 09/04/2023 18:28

It's not that old @Lwrenagain, I echo op about going to A&E. Dark urine is not great news.

spanglesj · 09/04/2023 19:01

Thank you, if it persists like this tmo I’ll go to a&e.

it was the most recent thread I could find but don’t really know how to use this. Is there a newer one do you think?

no info on your question I’m sorry but sorry about the migraines :( I’m guessing paracetamol not taking the edge off?
