I'm 21 weeks pregnant, already know the baby is large (had scan last week) but was measured by the midwife and my fundal (??) measurement is that of a woman 26 weeks pregnant! I am huge and no-one believes me when I say I'm just over 5 months. Dates are definitely not wrong as I had a dating scan at 9 weeks. Am worried something is wrong with me.

Its just a big baby, dont worry!!! Spme people have 6lb ers and others have 10lb ers, its nothing to worry about xxxxx

missjennipenni · 30/01/2008 16:54

YOu could also be carrying more than average water? But probably not worryingly so, as they would have mentioned it im sure. But your fundal height can vary, and no 2 pregnant women ever look the same

According to midwife is v unusual though - they had to get a second midwife in to check it was right! Said they'd need to keep an eye on me in case of gestational dibetes although apparently too early for that...

if i had a pound for everytime i was told

"ooh are you sure it's not twins" and "you'll never last til your due date"

I would be sunning myself in the caribbean by now.....

what's your family history like? in my family the babies are always late and big and we all carry big (my cousin was bigger than her friend who was expecting twins and due at the same time)

bubblagirl · 30/01/2008 18:37

i had same problem at 4 months was used to hearing ooh not long now look of shock only 5 months lol

did slow down when got to 36 weeks didnt seem to have such rapid growth was told all through going to be a big baby

in most cases probably true but for me 7 lb 1 oz

they will monitior as they did me your aloud to go so many over if rapid then will test you for diabetes but generally they just monitor to see how fast and in what time your growth spurts if that makes sence

every two weeks i was monitored i may have gone 1 up then 4 then none then 2 then it slowed down

You coul dhave polyhydromnius.

Next time you are measured to could be a cm per weeks.

Just keep well, keep an eye on baby's movements and ring your M/W if you have any worries.

Hiya I had this exact same thing!- at 26 weeks my midwife measured me and referred me to the hospital as I was measuring nearly + 4 weeks. I found it quite alarming at the time as I was given fortnightly growth scans to see if he was still growing at this rate or would slow down. (Not very comforting at 37 weeks to have a scan result that measured me at 42 weeks!) I asked to be induced early and was refused as they explained that it had a high failure rate and thus increased c-section risk.

I was enormous and made people in shops gasp in horror at 39 weeks. The rest of me was quite normal (size 12 /14) so I did look comical. My husband is 6'7 and i'm 5'7 with a family history of big babies (my grandma had a whopping 13lb boy-yikes).

In the end I was induced as I was 40 + 14 days and quite frankly ready to pop! sadly it failed and I had CS. My DS never engaged so that's why I looked so huge-in fact he had a 38cm head! He was born a gorgeous and healthy 10lbs 2oz. I've heard of loads of people pushing out large babies so don't panic. Just feel thankful that your LO's getting so much nutrition from you!

Invest in good stretch mark cream tho- I didn't do it religiously and have paid price ;(
Good luck tho i'm sure you'll be fine. (we were also told that sometimes there is quite an error margin on scan results

I always had a bigger than normal fundal measurement and he was 8lb 3 so not huge. Am pregnant with dc2 and the scan says this is a big baby but my friend recently was told her ds2 was at the top of the scale and he ended up 7lb 2 when born. Don't worry about it.

itsahardknocklife · 30/01/2008 19:52

my measurement were always about 5 weeks ahead of where I was in my pregnancy. We were told to expect a really big baby (I could have killed the doctor who told me that! Not what you want to know when you are expecting!). My son was 7lb6oz - a normal size. So don't worry. When I was 36 weeks pregnant they were estimating his weight to be over 9lb already!

Thanks all! The internet can be very scary as have been reading all about too much amniotic fluid now - I should stop checking for everything! Next check up 19 Feb so fingers crossed will be more 'normal'. Other than that at least the baby will be a good swimmer!
