Cyclogest for short cervix

I have a slightly short cervix and so am taking 2 Cyclogest pessaries a day. I've done this for about 15 weeks now, and was meant to have another cervical scan to measure cervix length about now (28 weeks.) This would have determined whether I could stop taking the Cyclogest or not. Symptoms on Cyclogest have been so horrible- thrush so bad I've bled from sores. Midwife is great but soreness is pretty common on this.
Now my consultant has said I won't be given another scan due to lack of resources. I'va had no indication as to what to do next- What to do when my prescription runs out in a few weeks, what I should do next, nothing. GP has no idea either as it's not his specialised area. Everyone I've spoken to is being kind, but they're ridiculously stretched and I feel set adrift a bit!

So basically what I'm asking is, if you were taking cyclogest for a short cervix in pregnancy, when did you stop taking it?

I stopped using it at 36 weeks both times, I had my last scan to check my cervix, this time at 24 weeks. The first time I was checked up until 31 weeks.

You have my sympathies, they're not pleasant, I know some on here had more success putting them up the back passage

Thanks for replying! They're such a pain aren't they. Midwife at hospital today told me that I could perhaps use it rectally but wanted to check with the consultant to make sure. She said she'd phone me early afternoon but didn't. I don't blame any of them, I just feel like I dont have anyone to advise me on this really.

@Bronnau sorry you are having trouble with this. I'm afraid I don't know anything about a short cervix but I have taken cyclogest on and off for years (IVF cycles) including in pregnancies and always take them rectally. It's not something we are used to doing but after the first one it is easy. If causes no mess and usually no irritation. Best of luck x

Hi @Bronnau
I had a preventative stitch placed at 14 weeks and am taking progesterone twice a day. Oh my god - they are also making me so sore and giving me thrush! Not quite as bad as yours as then I started taking them rectally, but now that is also sore! Just wondered when you stopped taking them, and was everything ok with your pregnancy? My obstetrician told me to stop taking them as they are supplementary to the stitch, but I feel bad as I know there is a lot of positive research about them. I am only 18 weeks but I can't stand another possible 22 weeks of this!! My obstetrician also said thrush is bad as it can irritate my cervix... nightmare! Hope all went well with your pregnancy x

Hey sofia, I've struggled with this too! It's so so awful isn't it. I was so sore at one point that I was admitted into hospital with bleeding, turns out it was the sores that were bleeding and not something more sinister. It was still absolutely horrible though.

Consultant prescribed me 3 canestan pessaries to be taken 3 nights in a row, which did help a lot (although nothing cleared it up.) I stayed on the cyclogest until 34 weeks, and then had a show almost immediately after stopping. They performed a test which said I was likely to give birth very soon, so I was given steroids to strengthen baby's lungs. However, today is my due date and still no baby, so everything has turned out fine thus far!

TBH if your consultant says that the stitch is enough, it probably is- I still don't get why I wasn't given one, and when I asked I never really got an adequate reply. I think that thrush like that is bound to be really bad for you and baby too- It makes you run down and knackered and it's hard to take care of yourself and feel calm and birth ready when you're in so much agony...

@PotatoFacedWombat hello, I just found your old post so hope you don’t mind me asking. I am 20 weeks pregnant and have just been prescribed clotrimidazole (anti fungal) for a yeast infection. It’s just a one off vaginal pessary, but I am already on vaginal cyclogest at night. Can I ask what advice you were given to do these? Did you just do them both vaginally one after the other? I was told to do both at night as lying down will help absorption. But she really didn’t say it with much confidence so I im not sure about doing that!
