I'm currently 30 weeks pregnant and really feel like I need some time away from work. I wfh in a relatively low stress job, on a laptop. I've been suffering with really bad headaches, blurred vision, and just generally feel tired and run down. The screen is obviously not helping my eyesight or my headaches. I feel like a week or two away from work will give me just the break I need to do some pottering around the house and a bit of self care. I have a very strong willed 3 year old so life isnt exactly completely stress free.

Am I being pathetic? Should I just suck it up? I haven't had any time off sick yet and I've only 6 weeks to go until annual leave and then maternity. I feel like I should just see it through. But I also need to catch a break, what gives?!

Has a midwife checked your urine and blood pressure lately?
These can be signs of pre-eclampsia so you need to get checked out, and yes if you're not well enough to work then don't work,
But that's different to wanting 2 weeks off work to potter around the house...

You need to get the headaches and blurred vision checked out, OP.

Sorry I should have said, I have been checked and received no proper diagnosis. My blood pressure is fluctuating between normal and high, and protein in urine is also fluctuating between a trace and 1++ so nothing definite enough to say Preeclampsia. I've been for GTT this morning to rule out diabetes so fingers crossed for a negative outcome.

Agree with @SouthwestSis - if you are not well enough to work then don’t. But IMO if you are not well enough to work you should rest and not be pottering around the house. Do you not have anymore annual leave you can use up before going on maternity?

Have you had your eyes tested recently?

TidyDancer · 14/11/2022 15:01

It's not about whether it's a good enough excuse, it's whether you're well enough to work or not. But I do get why you've overthinking that because I do it too.

Could you take annual leave?

xage · 14/11/2022 15:14

It would mean either bringing Mat leave forward or finishing work later, if I used annual leave now.

By pottering around the house I don't mean doing anything strenuous, maybe I should have said lazing around the house, but with a 3 year old at home majority of the time, I can hardly lay in bed all day. I just feel run down and overwhelmed and eliminating work seems the most obvious option available to me to free up some mental capacity.

No it was just over 12 months, so they are due. I've always suffered headaches and always had generally pretty good eye sight, so I'd like to hope nothings changed, but I know it could have.

I'm not you so can't tell how you fee, but it sounds like using some Annual leave for a break at home is what you need. Surely your 3 y/o will be at wherever he is when you normally work, so you will get some alone time?
