Migraines and neck pain

I’m 16 weeks and keep being hit my the most awful neck pain which then seems to be causing migraines and sickness (just as I thought I’d seen the last of it!)

Has anyone got any solutions? I’ve tried paracetamol with caffeine (obviously within limit), a wheat bag, 4Head, some gentle stretches. It’s like someone is drilling two bolts in the back of my neck.

Got a midwife appt this week so will mention it then too.

I'm 12.5w and spent Saturday in a dark room with ice packs, hot water bottles, 4head and paracetamol - the worse migraine pain I've had in a while! I was hoping it would get better as I get into the second trimester but not so sure...

The only thing that worked in the end was lying my whole head on the hot water bottle but I've also bought a migraine cap from Amazon in desperation that can be frozen or heated up and goes over your whole head. I don't have a midwife appt until Jan so if there are any easy wins please let me know! Otherwise I think you can ask GP for migraine medication if it's really bad - I've never had it pre pregnancy so not sure how effective it is.

How often are you getting them?

If you can stretch to it, you could try having an appointment with an osteopath? I also had headaches whilst pregnant as I'd slept with my neck at a weird angle. They definitely helped relieve it. A lot of osteopaths seemed to have specific experience with pregnant women, so I felt safe. Good luck Flowers

@Hyggeandhugs I’ll look into an osteopath thank you, good to know they work with pregnant women! I definitely think this one could have been triggered by sleeping awkwardly.

@MO22 oooh the migraine cap sounds interesting! They’re terrible aren’t they, I’m getting one every other week or so at the moment but they usually last for around three days.

I was going to suggest osteopath or accupuncture. I had it during pregnancy for migraines and it works a treat.

I've had almost 3 weeks of daily headaches and/or migraines. Its deen debilitating at times.

I spoke to my midwife about it a few days ago, she checked BP and it was fine. Its likely a surge of hormones and will eventualmy pass apparently. Im 16 weeks.

The neck pain is caused by the migraine, although I was certain it was the other way round and the neuro consultant told me otherwise.

I did acupuncture and used a Cefaly, it's a tens device essentially.

Charl881 · 14/11/2022 20:55

@BeautifulBirds that’s really interesting! I had migraines before getting pregnant but never with this neck pain. I’ll look at the ceflay, I found a tens machine amazing for labour so hopefully I would respond well to it.

I was so sure the neck pain was causing my awful migraines and even argued with the neuro surgeon!!

I really suffered in my first pregnancy with headaches until about 16 weeks.

My second pregnancy I didn't get headaches.

But bloody hell....the head....I just wanted to cut chunks out of myself!!

Try getting one (or two) of these. Pop them in the fridge. They feel amazing on your face (could also put on your neck) they really work wonders for me when I have a headache/migraine
