Tilted Cervix

I am 29 weeks and just remembered at my last smear the nurse said I had a tilted cervix. Wondering if anyone else does and did this effect your labour/delivery?

I have read online that it is fine, but just wanted to hear of any experiences or complications. Apparently 1 in 5 women have a titled cervix but most are unaware.

No, it won’t affect delivery, it’s a normal variant. I had a tilted cervix and gave birth normally twice.

It’s only a problem when it makes it difficult to reach the cervix to do a smear. And anyway, the anatomy in the pelvis changes so much during pregnancy that the cervix will have moved into a more accessible position long before 29 weeks. She wouldn’t have any trouble doing a smear now!

Thank you! That is good to know.

I had a horrible time at my last smear test when she said it was tilted. She was so rude and as if I was causing a problem for her and it put me off going for another (my next one was due just before I fell pregnant so will now have to wait until after pregnancy) Not the kind of attitude nurses should have when they should be doing all they can to encourage smear tests. Strangely my few before the last one were done easily with no problems.

In my experience (I also have a tilted uterus) it was fine. Like PP said, the weight of the baby will have tipped it into the 'correct' position by now.

No problem really, just difficult for a not very experienced doctor/nurse to do a smear.

One thing it happened to mine is that it turned a bit outwards during birth and stayed like, that which makes it look a bit cancerous to the not experienced GP’s eye after a while. They have sent me for urgent cancer checks 3 times over the last 10 years just for the gynaecologist to say, it is not cancer for good sake! All - the -time.

I have a tiled cervix and had two normal natural births. Try not to worry OP. I'm sure a tip when having a smear for a tiled cervix is to put your fists under your bum when you are laying down on the bed. But I might have just made that up. Worth looking into ways to make your next smear more comfortable.

@OrcaBlondie I can’t help on the labour side of things, as I’m only 16 weeks and this is our first pregnancy that has got this far but @rosiebl is right, for any future smear tests, try just putting your fists under your bum to lift it slightly, it makes a massive difference. Since I learnt this, I’ve never had a bad smear.
The nurse should have known to suggest this. Sorry you had that experience

gogohmm · 12/11/2022 23:26

I've got one, 2 east births. The only thing it makes difficult is smears if the nurse isn't experienced in them (last one was brilliant, no issues at all whereas at previous practice they insisted on the doctor doing mine Confused

StillWeRise · 12/11/2022 23:30

yes I have this, 4 normal deliveries, don't worry!
dificult to get a diaphragm fitted mind you but I hear these are virtually impossible to find these days anyway!

2 normal deliveries with a tilted cervix. Smears are a nightmare though
