Maternity coats?

I know pregnant women are supposed to be boiling hot all the time, but I'm not and it is getting COLD!I can probably do up my coat for another couple of weeks, but after that I'm a bit stuck.
How are you managing? The only maternity coat I've seen is a strange, overpriced pink tweed number from somewhere like Formes, but I'd be happy with a long zip up cardigan or a chunky maternity jumper I think... Checked out Next and Mothercare yesterday and there's nothing there at all - has anyone got any good ideas?

Hi Vic,
I ended up getting my maternity coat from a Next sale. Have you thought of trying Ebay?

If you're after a chunky cardie I've got a really nice one for only £15 from Matalan and as its lovely and stretchy and looks quite smart I reckon its gonna last my remaining 8 weeks. Its warm enough to use as a coat too.

Good luck!

i just bought a larger than normal coat from tesco. cost me £30, loads of room in it for growth (bought 2 sizes larger than normal) and my mum is a dab hand with the sewing machine so will take it in for me after the baby is born.

A poncho. I've just bought one from M&S. Thought it would be good for breastfeeding afterwards too - baby due in Feb. Gorgeous knitted maternity cardigans in Seraphine, but expensive I think. My poncho (Ok so they are plumetting out of fashion but there you are) cost £30 and will fit me afterwards as well.

a big warm fleece belonging to dh atm!!

Tommy · 01/12/2004 10:33

I wore a fleece belonging to DH (a freebie from work) with my pashmina - kept me warm all through December {smile]

I've got a long chunky cardi from next - had to order it at the till though as it wasn't on the shelves but the directory had it. I've got a poncho type thing too, although that's not as warm.

I just brought a huge coat instead for not too much money. Just resigned myself to having a baggy coat for the rest of the winter now my baby is here!!

logic · 01/12/2004 12:34

I got a lovely thick woollen maternity jumper from mothercare a few weeks ago, Vic69...
this one
but it is out of stock atm Maybe they will get some more in though. Last time, I wore dh's fleeces.

dizzymama · 01/12/2004 20:15

H&M have maternity coats in, they're not expensive (but I'm afraid I can't remember how much it was!!!)

I bought an el cheapo normal coat from Matalan two sizes bigger than normal. Cost £30. I'm 36 weeks now and can just about still do it up!
Will Oxfam it once baby is here.

Primark do cheap "normal" jackets - I just bought an 18-20 and it has amply covered my bump and I'm almost 38 weeks now. Think it was about £10-£12.

orangina · 02/12/2004 13:12

I think the poncho route is a good one to take.... monsoon have some very nice all wool ones, long enough to cover bum and bump, chunky rib knit, more classic than super trendy (therefore less likely to become instantly untrendy), red, black, cream..... and I think about £40?

miranda2 · 08/12/2004 20:39

its rubbish isn't it?? ARen't pregnant women meant to need coats? I live in the north of England and have to take the dog for a walk - a poncho will definitely NOT cut the mustard! Maybe if all you're doing is walking from house to car to centrally heated office it would be OK. I've just given up and gone to Primark - bought a long wool ('and cashmere' - its 1% cashmere!!!) coat in size 20 for £35, which seems to have plenty of room in it - might not take me up to the end of April, but should do to the end of Feb which covers the really cold bit of winter at least. I was amazed to find people like Blooming Marveloous and so on didn't do them.

bonymerryxmas · 08/12/2004 20:50

Yes, I've got a monsoon poncho and I adore it! It was £50 and is wool so really warm - very simple wide rib knit so looks quite classic (I went for black). There are loads of ponchos around but I would get wool, not acrylic, for warmth.

orangina · 09/12/2004 09:15

maybe a down filled puffy jacket for you then miranda for those blustery walks! Could you buy a mans one (GAP? Anywhere else?) and then donate it to dh when bump is gone? I have one already (dates from well before pregnancy), which dh and I already share, will have to see whether the bump will fit under it later on (am 22 weeks now), but it's very cosy at the moment (as well as the poncho for those more urban moments Grin...)

charlie95 · 09/12/2004 09:57

i just bought a 2-in-1 rainproof fleece lined jacket from bon marche for £35 size 24 !! i'm only 25 wks pg but have got all of dec, jan, feb and mar to go through yet. hopefully it'll last !!! but theres just nothing else around where i live. i even had trouble just buying ordinary maternity clothes. only available in mothercare here in my town. so i went to NCT nearly new sale few wks ago and got loads of used maternity clothes that were nice for somehting like £2-4 each item. bargains for what we wear of them.

I just saw one of these swing coats on ASDA. 35 pounds new, but for someone like me that willneed it forthe whole winter, might be the perfect solution, and fashionable!Smile

I'm 24 wks and just got a gorgeous fleece coat from Jojo Maman Baby. It's comes down to just below the knee (I'm 5'8), has a hood and was £40. They did black but I went for the ridiculously impractical cream (I have a grubby 13m old!) but it's completely machine washable so I figured it's my one chance to own a cream coat! Toasty warm too .
