@Badassbreastfeeder85 all of my midwife appointments are at home, it's so nice and stress free.

PotteringAlonggotkickedoutandhadtoreregister · 11/11/2022 17:58

Yup. Lots of my midwife visits were at home.

Badassbreastfeeder85 · 11/11/2022 20:47

What were the reasons for the home visits ? What are they looking for? With my first midwife visits during pregnancy weren't a thing

@Badassbreastfeeder85 my postcode falls under the midwifery team that carry out all of their care in the home. They are able to do everything the same as if you were having the appointment at hospital. I found it better as didn't have to think about driving to the hospital and fighting for a parking space.

Badassbreastfeeder85 · 11/11/2022 21:14

In my last pregnancy appointments were at the Dr's surgery and had my booking appt at the Dr's surgery too, just seems very strange

I had to have one as she gave me the wrong time for my appointment so it was the only way she could see me.
It was just a maternity appointment in my house instead of the Dr’s - she took bloods as usual and listened to her heartbeat with me lying on the sofa.
She hadn’t come to creep about my house and check I was a danger to the baby or my toddler DS or anything else that would make it slightly strange. It was perfectly fine and much nicer than having to fight for a parking space

PurBal · 12/11/2022 16:30

I wish I could get the appointments at home. I have to drive 30 minutes to mine.

Stephanie226 · 12/11/2022 21:46

I just had my 22 week check which was at home but that was the only one that is at home. I also find it weird but was quite nice being in my own space however wasn't happy that she was dipping my urine on my tele unit 😂😂😂

Badassbreastfeeder85 · 13/11/2022 12:49

I was meant to have my appointment on the17th which theyve cancelled, she text me Friday asking to come to my house Monday,I feel a bit ambushed and like it's an invasion of privacy so I'll just decline it

PuttingDownRoots · 13/11/2022 12:52

She was probably trying to fit you in on her rounds between other home visits

I had loads at home with my now-9yo... I needed daily checks so which ever midwife had time cane to my house.

Invasion of privacy is a bit dramatic. The midwife is a healthcare professional who is coming to see you to monitor your health and well-being in pregnancy.
They may well have had feedback that some people prefer home visits (avoids parking challenges, sitting around wasting time in a clinic waiting room).
If you cancel due to paranoia you’re doing yourself and your baby no favours at all.

DancingRabbit · 13/11/2022 13:11

Monday she's probably doing home rounds and doesn't have a room to see you in. Also you're not looking to cancel the appointment, you're looking to rearrange (Inc to a different location), which they'll probably be fine with but there's no need to miss the appointment just because they wanted to do it at home.

swirlypinky · 13/11/2022 13:13

I wouldn't mind. I work at home so that's ultra convenient too

rebecca100 · 13/11/2022 13:16

I find them great, no travelling to hospital or trying to park and if they're running late you're in the comfort of you're home and not stuck in an uncomfortable waiting room.
They are no way an invasion of privacy and not like they just turn up on the doorstep with no notice.
I have another home appointment on Sunday and I look forward to welcoming the midwife into my home.

Scatteredpictures · 13/11/2022 13:16

Not saying this applies to you but as someone who works in safeguarding areas and has a naturally suspicious mindset because of that, someone worrying about why a midwife wants to come to their home and calling it a privacy invasion would make me question why they didn’t want it.

You’d probably be better placed calling them to discuss your worries over the appointment than just declining it.

Its purely a routine appointment that takes place in one room of your home and depends how long it is before they can fit you in again. The midwife doesn’t want or have time to go round your home checking it.
Are you going to decline the pre birth health visitor home visit too or when you’ve had your baby and you have midwife visits at home?

bravotango · 13/11/2022 13:17

I've had all of mine at home! Signed up for a homebirth so just assumed that was why. She never went anywhere in the house apart from the sofa, and just did urine test/BP and the usual appointment tick box exercises on her laptop. Absolutely nothing to do with checking your house or anything, 100% clinical. Definitely not an invasion of privacy if you're worried about that

kitcat15 · 13/11/2022 13:17

What have you got to hide OP? The midwife will visit you at hom

kitcat15 · 13/11/2022 13:17

....home after birth...whats the difference?

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/11/2022 13:18

Both my pregnancies had a home visit at about 12 weeks.

Quite normal. Chance to spend time when relaxed to answer all your questions.

MajorCarolDanvers · 13/11/2022 13:19

You sound paranoid

Scarecrowrowboat · 13/11/2022 13:30

All of mine were after the booking apt. So much better.

Badassbreastfeeder85 · 13/11/2022 13:36

I dont have a high risk pregnancy needing extra visits,I have no health conditions preventing me from attending the doctors,my house isn't a public area so I don't feel I need to facilitate strangers coming to my house, after birth I may not be able to visit the surgery so that makes sense but isn't an issue now,I haven't signed up for a home birth so the suitability of the home to give birth in isn't in question, why is there a pre birth health visitor visit?again didn't happen with my first

OP posts:
rebecca100 · 13/11/2022 13:39

@Badassbreastfeeder85 midwife appointments carried out in the home are not specifically for high risk, health conditions or home births, it's simply another way some teams conduct the appointments.

Just because it didn’t happen with your first doesn’t mean there’s something wrong with it! They may well have changed their ways of working since then - possibly because others find it more convenient.

As others have said, are you going to refuse post natal visits at home or a health visitor home visit because your house isn’t a “public area” 🙄

Midwives are busy people, they’ll want to get the visit done and move onto their next one so they aren’t running late (and end up working unpaid overtime as a result). They are not there to snoop and wont have the time or interest in doing so.

If it was me I’d have loved a home visit, much less disruptive to my working day than spending hours traveling to and from a clinic and waiting for ages in a waiting room. You should feel privileged to be offered such a service!!

Twizbe · 13/11/2022 13:53

Just ring and ask to have your appointments at the Drs / clinic as it works better for you.

Between my 2 kids (2 years) lots changed and I had a pre birth HV appointment for number 2 which I didn't have for number 1.

Was your first during covid? A lot has changed since then too.
